Yes that fore and aft dimensional brim is typical of women's fedoras plus the grosgrain sweat / bow on right. I once ordered a women's hat by mistake (back bow) but it found a good home.

Ephraim Tutt,
I won the brother/sister to your Super Borsalino; a very nice shade of gray. Your expose' encouraged me to look for the tag under the sweat band, it reads:

A2864 47954
Bismuto J. Asta - - 5 1/2

the last two letters of the surname are smudged.

Mr. J. McKewan name is hand written on the side of the liner. But there is more script under his name. Mr. Mckewan has his home and business/work phone numbers listed. The area code of his home phone number indicates that he lived in Ventura, California and the area code of his business number indicates Los Angeles proper. Under these two phone numbers, he has written: Call Collect. Signifying to me that this Borsalino must have been a pretty important Hat for him.

My Super Borsalino also has the wind/trolley string with the cloth color of the button matching perfectly with the color shade of the hat. There is also the same cloth size tag as your hat.

I am of the opinion that the names under the serial numbers, "might" be the names of Italian gentleman who had something to do with the finishing of the individual fedoras.

Whatever the history, these Super Borsalino's seem to be of very high quality. Who knows, they" might" be something special.

Hello Bruno. That is indeed fascinating! My Mr McKewan Super Borsalino also has his name and phone numbers "call collect" He obviously was very fond of his hats. And who could blame him - those Super Borso's are exceptional lids. Whatever its date, it is certainly a top quality hat.

As I said in my post, I've only seen one other Super Borsolino and it was sold in the same Milan shop. I guess it's possible that it could have been a special model exclusive to that store, but we just don't have enough info to go on. And as for the date of production - who knows. I wonder if the '47' in the serial number is significant - but the size tag looks more recent than 1947. But when it comes to style - those Italians are ahead of their time!

Last of the great Borsalino Binge

The last of the Borsalino Binge arrived today:

Size: small US 7
Brim: 2 7/8" with 3/8" brim binding (Got that, Mr. P????)
Crown: 5" uncreased
Sweat: 2"
Ribbon: 1 7/8"

It's in absolutely pristine shape. Because the sweat seam is perforated, but taped and the fact that the liner's taped in over the serial number tag I suspect that it's been apart for cleaning at some point. The tape's quite old, so perhaps it was cleaned and then put away until now.

It's soft-soft-soft and will take any crease. With the wide brim, it's a shade machine!

This ends my Borsalino binge. For now. (I love these hats!

This reminds me a lot of my cream Borso, but yours has a bound brim while mine came with a Cav edge.

I have to say that this one here slipped me completely. Otherwise, I'd have gone for it. Ever since I bought my shade machine, as you called yours, I thought that it'd be nice to have another one with bound brim.

Miller Hats Borsalinos

Having ordered, and returned a Stetson "Murphy" from Miller Hats (color in real life was a lot darker than the pic on the website, and the fit was too snug for the 7 5/8 indicated on the tag), I am now looking at the Borsalino "Como" listed on their website.
I have very little experience with Borsalinos, other than a packable "Allesandro" I bought from Village Hats and quite like.
Anyone on the "Como?"

I had a Como and loved it. I got it from Bencraft hats (you should check them out, best prices on Borsalinos) it was black and had a nice whip stitched brim. Nice felt, soft yet dense. You won't be dissapointed. As to what happened to my Como, I might have posted it somewhere here in another thread: a nasty wind snatch it off my noggin while crossing the Brooklyn Bridge.

Borsalino Binge - +1

What's one more Borsalino when I'd been bingeing all week?

This little stingy was languishing on eBay at its rather modest opening bid with one bidder. Not a serious one, it turns out

Specs:
Brim = 1 7/8"
Crown = 5" uncreased
Ribbon = 2 1/8" with nicely flared bow
Cavanagh-style edge
Liner is faded aubergine satin with a goop shield that's like the material from an inexpensive garment bag. Not cellophane or crinkly plastic like modern Stetsons. Very flexible and transluscent rather than transparent.
Sweat is the same satin as the liner, but backed by some sort of canvas and nicely piped. (Who would want to sweat on this???

)
Sold from an Italian shop, but not Punti sized (?)
Sweat marked XXXXXXXXXX Chinchilla
Came out of the box pretty hairy but a good grooming made the fur lie down flat and sleek.

And so it goes to join the rest of the Borsalinos that are taking over a corner of the guest bedroom.
