Love the hand-creased look of the side-pinch on this one. Somehow this looks like a diamond side-dent to me...

Nervous twitch or boredom [huh].

These sorts of creases will occasionally arrive spontaneously with the daily handling of good felt.

Mostly though, these sorts of creases occur while we are waiting with a wet felt... just waiting.... like at the dentist's office, or the airport, or the restaurant, or the auto shop, or the ball park...............just waiting... and fondling

Stetsonian question

What distinguishes the Stetsonian? It almost looks as though the dimensions have changed over the years but it is hard to tell from the advertisements posted. Does anyone have any idea when they quit making the Stetsonian?

Like every other Stetson model, there's variation. A Stetsonian is one because it's marked as such on the sweat. It's in no way conclusive, but the earliest ad I've found is from 23 and the latest is from 61.

I didn't realize that we had a Stetsonian Institution, or I would have posted this a while back. I bought this Stetsonian on ebay, but it was way too small for me. Following that, I sold it to a fellow Lounger, who was planning on refurbishing it. Hopefully, it will show up again in this thread when the refurb is done.

Here it is, as it arrived, box and all, a Royal Stetson Deluxe from Zachry, in Atlanta:

Purchase

I just won the bid on a Stetsonian on OFAS, Sunday. It hasn't arrived yet but I am curious about how to date it when it does arrive. The brim appears to be larger than the brim shown on the 61 advertisement, so would I be correct in assuming it is older than that? It is my first old hat purchase and I am hopeful that it is a good hat. The sweatband is also marked 5X.

Hat Age

What is it that would make you believe it is from the 80's?

Is the age of a hat just guesswork or is there something that would help a novice figure out what is a good old hat other than the description? I am sure that some can be put into a ballpark just based on the type (such as stratoliner). If it is a model like the stetsonian that appears to have been produced for several years, what helps to identify age other than a sales receipt or a date on the box?

Years of looking at hats helps. There is a science to it, albeit not a formal science. The hang tag on your hat gives the American size along with the metric size. This was not being done during the Philadelphia production, making it made after 1970. Vintage Stetsons were produced in metric sizes for markets that used the metric system, such as Mexico. The post WWII manila and black style hang tag with a two digit numeral.

Just because it might not quite be as old as you might have hoped, sure does not mean that it will not still be a very good hat. Post some photos when it arrives.

It arrived today. I am out of town on travel but my wife seemed pretty impressed by it. I have a campdraft that is new. I purchased it as my first hat based on the good comments I have read on this forum about the akubra hats. I also have an old stratoliner that is in pretty good shape but is too small for me. I am planning to get it cleaned at a hat shop in Fort Worth and after that I will probably sell it.

Modern

This is a Temple I won on ebay several years ago. It doesn't have Stetsonian written on the sweatband, just the liner.
I hope I can find one as nice as the others in this thread someday.

Currently for sale in the classifieds; but this hat deserves to be listed in this thread.

A fantastic color combination between body, grosgrain and edge binding.

The hat is vintage pristine. The sweat is perfect; soft and subtle, no cracks. The stitching is perfect. The reed is perfect, as you can see there is no chipping. The liner is free of stain and is minty.. No stains, scars, odors; and no signs of mothing.

Size: 6-7/8
Brim: 2-5/8
Crown: 4-1/2, from brim to top of crease
Crown Open: Looks like 5’’ to me.
Grosgrain: Medium Moss Green, 1-3/4 inches wide
Edge Treatment: bound with Tan Grosgrain, equal on both sides, top and bottom, width ½ inch.
