This is all driving me - when comes the time to upgrade - further and further in the direction of a 50" screen.... maybe not so good when it comes to attracting ladies... for some reason all the women I know seem to dislike larger tv screens intensely. [huh]

I don't find that at all, among my 20-30 year old range of female friends at least. If anything, they want to commandeer the thing to watch their movies or play video games. The latter is the recent interesting phenomenon of active "group games" like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, or anything on the Nintendo Wii, actually attracting women to gaming. It isn't anti-social anymore!

My copy of North by Northwest on BluRay awaits me under the tree and will likely be watched Christmas afternoon. Can't wait. :D

Also, since there really isn't a place reserved to post "deals" on the forum, I thought I'd mention that Amazon has the 7-film "Preston Sturges: The Filmmaker Collection" DVD set for $28 today. Just picked it up since I own the not-included Miracle of Morgan's Creek already. Seems like I am buying all my own present this year...

Maybe it's an age thing.... to be honest, I've hit that age at which the idea of a woman in her twenties just doesn't appeal any more. (Ironically, that's ostly what seems to be attracted to me.... I guess a lot of them are under the mistaken impression academic over here are rich. lol ).

I can't wait for the day It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is released on BluRay. Same can be said for the original trilogy Indiana Jones films... I could take or leave Star Wars since I've spent enough on different versions over the years! :whistling

THOUGH, when it comes to some older films, I can't tell a difference between bd and dvd. Goldfinger for one, looks equally good on either format, in my opinion.

Goldfinger (and all of the old Bond movies) had the benefit of a frame-by-frame restoration from the original print even for the DVD release. Usually, movie do not get that kind of treatment. My understanding is that the Blu-Ray process improves the quality without having to do the frame by frame restoration.

But I also agree the black and white movies from the 30's and 40's do not look much different in HD. We have TCM in HD and I really can't tell a difference.

Goldfinger, being my favorite Bond film, and competing with a few others as my favorite period, is the only older Bond I've seen in HD.

That frame by frame restoration for dvd really shows, too. THOUGH, I expected a little more crispness for HD. I probably won't bother buying the other Connery Bonds in blu ray.

Bruce Wayne, are you refering to the IJ trilogy in blu-ray? Or are you including IAMMMMW? I await your replay with bated breath...

I know Indy's supposed to be out in '10, pushed back from Christmas '09.

Has anyone seen North by Northwest in bluray? I was wondering from a disinterested party if it was worth getting.

I have and the transfer and restoration makes it look like it was filmed yesterday! A true masterpiece. It is like they cleaned the grime off of the Mona Lisa and discovered what the painting originally looked like...

My understanding is that most of the films on TCM HD are just upscaled, not remastered in HD. It's akin to using an expensive photocopier to enlarge a photo print; you don't really get a better picture, but it also shouldn't be too much worse, despite the bigger size. Remastering from the original negatives instead, you could expect a much sharper, more detailed picture.

When the studios take the time and money to clean the film and do the remastering work right, the results are pretty miraculous. I have both Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz on BluRay and both look fabulous, especially when compared to the DVDs.

Of course, it is very important to note the relationship between HD resolution (720p, 1080p, etc), the size of your screen, and the distance you sit. If you sit too far away, have too small a screen, have not-as-good source material, or any combination of those, then the high definition content is wasted.

This chart is a great reference. There's one other variable not on it -- how good your eyesight is ;)

Thanks for that...I work in TV and suspected TCM is just upscaling the images. The station I work for does that with our news and other non-network programming.
