I love the Fed IV!!

Glad you guys like the Federation IV! I helped on designing that hat, with Ron Lilburne. I sent him an Indy 4 hat, and he took it to Akubra to match it with a block they had in stock but did not use, to get close to what I handmade for the last film. They did not have my exact blockshape, but he chose the one closest to it, and used the crown height and brim specs per Indy 4. But, it is their own vintage block, Akubra's that is. Ron sent me the prototype, and I wear it to this very day.

I, along with MK and a couple others worked with Ron on getting the original Federation as well. Ron is a great guy and believes in working with folks in getting hats people will buy. Glad to see it is selling! Fedora

Agree, as he did with the Glen Grey Campdrafts but can you nudge him our way for a Moonstone Campdraft, PLEASE? [huh]

I really love my Federation IV Deluxe. While there are several extra things about it that make me love the hat more, the durability and value for the money is what impresses me most.

The other things would be the group of men who worked to create the Federation line in the first place, Steve Delks presence in the Fed IV, and third, I like telling folks my hat came from Australia.

Only a small part, as Ron chose the block to be used at Akubra. But, yep, I did have input on the specs. It really is not an Indy 4 hat though. It is its own hat, made from an old vintage block Akubra used at one time in their history. I liked mine, as soon as I saw it. Pretty versatile hat too. Doesn't have to be an Indy fedora, as you can crease it various ways. Fedora

And thank you for your help with that. :eusa_clap I love my brown and Moonstone Fed IVs. They get a lot of wear and serve as a great placeholder until I can someday afford one of yours!

Moonstone Fed IV

I like the lighter color of the moonstone. It is a fun hat to bash. I did a five point diamond on this one. I will try to post the results on the diamond page. I still think a Campdraft would look good in this color.

i think the fed would look sharp with a brim binding and a not so contrasting ribbon, like a medium charcoal rather than black.

sharp looking bashing there. i'm debating between the campdraft and the fed for the next purchase.

I had the same feeling on the black ribboned moonstone but I guess it was done with the darker ribbon to match the Indy iv look.

I like the colour combination on the cruiser grey CEO and would love something like that in a fed iv...

outback roadtest

I recently took my Fed iv along on a trip out west to see how it went in the outback sun. I've worn a variety of felts in summer before and spent my teens working on farms in the sun but I'v gotta say I cooked in the Fed!

I guess it is a carbon grey and proves the old adage "never employ a man in a black hat" presumably because he'll always be looking for shade.

I found once the temp went over 35C my hair was soaked. I took out the liner with its plastic crown and it did help a bit but still it was pretty bloody warm.

Still not prepared to go straw so it's a light felt, light coloured hat for me in summer from now on!

Dark hat plus sun

Elvisroe - I live in a desert area of California, and have been wearing cowboy hats since I was in a stroller. My grandfather always used to say only a fool would wear a black hat when it was warm, and I was always skeptical. A few springs and summers cowboying in the desert sun convinced me he was right. I've been a Silverbelly man for the last 20 years, after seeing others have near heat strokes due to their need to look like Garth Brooks. I love dark hats, but wearing one outside where I live in the daytime between May and October is just not adviseable. I worked with a kid at a large rental stables who grew up watching too much TV and thought he looked more authentic in all black, right down to his batwing chaps. That knucklehead must have lost 10 lbs a day in sweat. He'd sweat right through his hat most days, and be covered in dry salt crystals from head to toe when night fell. Funny how much a little difference in color can cause such misery. Frank

After watching all you guys having fun with your Federations I finally decided to grab one for myself. I got this one in brown for an everyday casual hat, so decided on the Indy bash.

The open crown thing was new for me, and I really enjoyed 'sculpting' it the way I wanted. It was a hot summers day but I still couldnt resist wearing it out yesterday afternoon to break it in, and I love it! Now I'm thinking about the moonstone...

Pera.T, nice looking hat. You molded it well. What is the breed of bike you are sitting on? Where I am in Canada, the bikes are put away and the snowblowers have taken their spot in the garage.

Thanks Duper! It was my first time with an open crown hat, and I'm very pleased with the result. Though I'm not sure how some of you loungers manage to do the teardrop bash, that must take skill!

The bike is a GSX1200 Streetfighter! Hmmm snowblowers, are they ride on?

Buckaroo Hatters’ radical alterations, actually. Mike refused to send me a sneak preview, citing Santa’s list and all that, so I’m waiting with as much eager anticipation as anyone! I had the seller of the base hat (Doublegun) send it direct to Mike, and Mike sent it directly to my parents (it’s to be their Christmas gift to me), so I’ve never seen it.

One caveat, the hat came up in a conversation about grays, but the hat is actually their brown model (the Indy hat), which is a big reason I wanted it customized (that and having always wanted to have my own Whippet). If it works out, though, I’m planning to eventually have a gray, and maybe a lighter brown done too.

Unfortunately, we’re not celebrating with my parents until New Year’s Day, so it’s more like three weeks before we’ll get to see it.
