I know there is a criminal hats thread, so I thought maybe one for the good guys. This is not a call for all the cop haters to come out. I just think these are cool pics.
These are from the funeral of the officers in Washington.

There were over 20,000 officers there including 1,000 Royal Canadian Mounties who lined up and marched in.

I notice the crease is different than what I normally see with the pinch in the front here.

I sure hope there aren't any cop haters on this forum.

These pictures really made me think about the extent to which
cops keep the hat tradition going. Just hadn't thought about it.
There are a LOT of hats in those photos. Very cool indeed.

We already lost too many cops due to one crazy idiot here in
Oakland this year. It sure was sad to hear about that loony in WA.

Straw policeman's helmets

The navy-blue policeman's hat is such a great British icon and I just love the fact that someone has thought to remake it using straw. The only two places where they wore them were Luton, which is the centre of the straw-hat business in the UK, and Singapore.

If you see an Orange Co. or Orlando cop wearing a hat, it's a ball cap.[huh] I don't even recall seeing them wearing HAT hats at funerals or other functions where dress uniforms and such are worn.

Nice thread, and cool seeing the police wearing hats, real ones that is!

It's really hard to top the Mounties. They have a great uniform from top to bottom. Seeing a moving wall of 1000 certainly was a site to see. Does anyone know if they always creased their hats in that fashion though, with a 'dent' directly in front?

Unfortunately money always comes into play. Where i work now issues ballcaps, made in china that don't fit so hot... Where I used to work issued the stra cattleman hat but was not the correct long oval shape so i had a headache in about a minute. FHP issues nice hats and I see regular wear on their guys.

It's not unusual for law enforcement types to exchange patches, coffee mugs, pins, challenge coins, myriad logoed items, even uniform items like rank insignia or hat badges. I've seen this particularly on the international level and training classes. The European officers always seem to have the best stuff. I've seen some nice hat and helmet collections decorating offices and British bobby helmets are always a hit.

Nice post, IC :eusa_clap .

San Antonio Police Department wears the saucer caps: blue for patrol and white for traffic ( often without the halo, giving the "crush cap" effect ). Officially, I think the county is still wearing Stetsons or Resistols or whatever with a cattleman's crease. You rarely see them save for full dress. Same for the State Police, except for when you're way out in the sticks, and I'd imagine they feel a bit more of the "cowboy spirit" out there.

I started this little collection a couple of months ago:

So far it's one of each of the major styles. The first, the ball top, is a Christys'. The second is the plain rosette type and is from the 1950s/60s. It sports both the parade chinstrap and the riot strap. The last one is of fairly recent manufacture. The coxcomb has a shell on the front, though a cross is another popular design.
I haven't decided how much I want to carry on with this little diversion, but these helmets are really neat. I'm sure a lot of the police in the UK hate the things, but they certainly SAY: "Policeman!". Much the same way the US fire helmets are instantly recognizable...speaking of which, I need to find the fire helmet thread .

I think the Atlanta PD Hat Squad has been mentioned on FL before. "The first time an Atlanta police homicide detective solves a case, he's rewarded with a fedora and welcomed into the 'hat squad.'"
