IMO, if you want the best for someone to paint your A-2, then Jerome is the person to do it. He gives each painting the look and feel of a WWII jacket. Here's his site.

Belly Tank, the "Nasty Apache" jacket on Jerome's site used to belong to me. He hand made the tooled American flag and 12thAF patches and did a great job. I haven't seen anyone come close to him, and for what he charges, there's definately no one that comes close.

Hey fellas thanks.
Stony hows the new job? Martin what's crappinin? Enjoying fatherhood?
Man I dig it the most. I see "Kools" post here now and again he lives about 5 miles away from me.
I always love painting jackets, just part of the lifestyle I guess. Now I gotta slow down on having them follow me home.
I am up to my armpits right now in jackets and flatheads and a two year old.
That being said. Grant flew in to town . Hitting chi-town tomorrow. Going to see the "Wizard of Paul" and O.D. on originals . Were going vintage searching too.
Last time I was down there this past (cats pajamas show) I pulled more quality early 50's vintage and rock and roll than I have in say, 6 or so years.
I have also heard rumblings of a 2007 Green bay rockabilly shindig ...You dig? Martin you have to come for this .....good times.
The Cheaters (us) are going to try to host the car show this time.

What a great surprise Jerome!! The Van Gough of jacket art!! Glad you found us here and as you'll see from all the vintage rooms, it has a bit more variety than just flight jackets..etc, so something for everyone with a penchant for the Golden Era!
Hope to see more of you (and you'll see you're mentioned in the Reference Library under the Jacket Art section at the top of the WWII room!)

I really just don't have much time to do posts and get too involved.
1.--- A 2 year old Daughter
2.---- jacket's to paint
3.--- hot rod to finish.
And so on , and on ,and.....
I usually check every couple days or so.
Will try to keep up, this is a good forum and super helpful for vintage addicts such as myself.
Stony you will be getting my Wolfpack jacket in the mail .
I have to put my long distance travel stuff on hold . Had to buy a new ride for daily transportation.

Jacket Art Adhesion Problems
Good Morning Gentlemen
I am a new member to the Lounge although longstanding member of Vintage Flight Jackets and VLJ2 prior to that, being an avide collector / wearer of original leather jackets, primarilly USN ones.
I wonder if one or two of you artists could give me some advice re jacket painting?
I've sent an original M-422a USN WW2 jacket to a UK based artist to have some artwork painted using acrilic paints. Unfortunately the first time he did it the paint started to peel off. We suspect that this might be because the jacket has been treated with hide food or similar in the past, although it doesn't feel greasy to the touch. He's now had another go rubbing the area with lighter fluid first to "degrease" but with the same result. Can I ask do you have any experience with this and could you suggest anyway we could treat the back panel of the jacket so that it would accept paint?
Jerome has kindly recommended that we use acetone or laquer thinner or finger nail polish remover which makes sense but can I ask if there is any other advice for this pourpose? I'd really like to get two or three jackets painted but am in a frustrating position at the moment and really hope to be able to find a way of removing the repelling food hide residue without damage to the jacket and thus permit painting.
Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated.

After lightly sanding the surface and a good alcohol and or acetone rub down.
This is what I did and it worked very well on a jacket I was having the same problem with. Several treatments with acetone or alcohol may be needed. After painting a small area, let it dry thoroughly and then test the adhesion with tape. If the paint still peals somewhat, treat it again and test. Sometimes it takes several tries to get enough of the oil out for it to work. Hope this works out for you.
I also learned another great tip for greater paint adhesion. Works especially well if you should happen to have trouble getting paint to stick even on a sanded surface. The trick is to first brush a little water onto the area you are to paint. Let it soak into the leather, then apply a very dilute (about 75% water and a little medium) color mixture. Capillary action will draw the paint down into the leather fibers and form a very stable base on which to further develop your painting. Sort of the same principle as "fat over lean" that we use in oil painting.

Many thanks for the info, Major Nick. I've passed this onto the artist. He did a test yesterday using acetone on the back of a pocket flap and said that it seems promising, drying out the surface of the leather and giving it a matte appearance. He's going to have a go at the back panel itself today so fingers crossed it'll work okay. Certainly, having had your's and Jerome's feedback I don't see why this treatment shouldn't work.

so any acrylics from an art store are fine ? as long as the say they can be used with leather. and I dont have to use specific "leather paint" ?

Does anyone know what types of paint were used on original painted jackets? I know many jackets were painted with the same paint they painted the aircraft with and those are the ones that do not hold up well.
I have used acrylic(liquitex tube) on the jackets and squadron patches I have done and it works great for me, but i dont think that acrylic was readily available then, if it was even invented yet. I could be wrong.
