Been wearing my Matt Deckard since I received it a couple weeks back and I'm just kind of amazed that folks have been so accepting of it. Was expecting all kinds of grief, but other than one guy saying he wants a fedora and a couple of 'nice hat' compliments, there's been nothing said.

The bottom line is I'm just glad. Glad the squares don't care and glad I didn't allow that expectation of their caring to keep stopping me from doing something I've wanted to do for a while now.

Already planning my next purchase.

I know the feeling. I too get looks, but all seem to come with respectful head nods, I like your hat comments, and smiles.

I'd like to ask a general question to all. While wearing your fedora/hat, do you acknowledge someone else wearing a nice fedora/hat and comment?

I always say something to a person who is wearing a vintage type lid,whether its a fedora, newsboy etc.

Its nice to see others that enjoy our passion.

Hats are wonderful alone or together

My experience has been similar. Most people seem to admire the hats and most of the stares are simple curiosity.

I have had very few goofy comments over my years of wearing hats. I get good comments semi-regularly.
I have some friends/acquaintances that wear hats infrequently and they have lots of experiences with catty comments. Not to be arrogant, mean, etc. but these friends/acquaintances look goofy in their hats. Bad shapes for their faces, hats that look like they have been stored on the parcel shelf below back windows of their cars (some have been...), and hats that are worn way too low or way too high. If you wear a hat like you mean it people know. If you wear it like it is costume piece they know and have catty things to say.
I would take their lack of catty comments as meaning you look good and correct in your hat, a great compliment in my book.

I have been known to do this from time to time. Though not always while wearing one of my fedoras or flat caps. Most have taken well to my comments, although a few surprisingly seemed uncomfortable or turned off that I spoke out to them in a crowd to talk about their hat. Maybe they just weren't used it being noticed.

I would have to say I get a lot of compliments mostly from women when wearing my hats. I wish I saw more men wearing hats to make a comment but I just dont see many. Must be the places I'm hanging out.

Sorry for getting the discussion of track, but could someone please explain to me what the the true meaning of "squares" is? I thought in the 50's that the squares were the "decent" kids as opposed to the Rock and Rollers. Of course I like Elvis and all, but I may be a little bit of a square my self if it means what I think it does.

Just had to bring that up as I've always wondered!

I wouldn't mind having a Matt Deckard hat myself.

Very interesting. I didn't realize "square" had been used as a negative term even before the Sixties, and as far back at least as the 40's. And yet, today we still hear the term, "fair and square!"

Wikipedia:"The term "square", in referring to a person, originally meant someone who was honest, traditional and loyal. An agreement that is equitable on all sides is a "square deal". The evolution of American culture transformed the term from a compliment to an insult to an obsolete term."

It was explained to me once that men's shoes at the beginning of the 17th century had squared toes and towards the end of that century the style changed to rounded toes. The older men still wore the old squared-toe style and were considered hopelessly out of style and "square".

I also always comment when seeing another gentleman wearing a hat.

As far as the square toes, I see that they are coming back, I spotted a few pair in the window of mens shoe store the other day.......[huh]

Glad to hear that you're getting positive comments on your lid, Johnny Astro! I think the positive comments probably mean that you're wearing the hat, and not letting it wear you.

What I always find interesting is that I get compliments from men and women about my hats, but the same men who like my hats on me are also the same ones who never seem to believe that a hat might look good on them.

I too am quite new to hat wearing, but for some reason people tend to pay me a little more respect. I'm 18, so I'm "equal" to cashiers and the like, since they too are younger in my area. One notable occasion I was taking my girl to the movies and the man infront of me orderd his tickets and the attendant gave them to him with the customary, "enjoy the show". This guy had to by late 30's early 40's. I got, " I hope you enjoy the show sir". Then the guy who takes the tickets gave me a, "Your theater is last on the right sir". The hat seems to make a differance. Guess who gonna wear his hat more?
