Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Yesterday I had a mixed set of comments.

On leaving the house to go to the market to scour for goodies (I found an amazing hat!) there were some kids outside my house who shouted "Granny" and snickered to them selves. Charming. So I put my best wiggle on and kept walking.

Then was getting on the train to go out and a man smiled at me as he was getting off and said "My, don't you look old" which, I think I am deciding to take as a compliment.

Last one of the day was from a lovely lady who came up to me and apologised for the random introduction, but that she thought I looked amazing and she wish she had the courage to do it. I told her of course she can do it, it's all about having confidence! :)

I have had my share of granny or old school teacher comments. Lsst night, while waiting to go into a movie a couple came up to me and said they were talking about my sense of style. The woman said that I looked as I'd just stepped off the set of the movie Pearl Harbor.

I spent yesterday showing my goddaughter around London and went in to get her a pampering makeover. The make up lady asked how old she was, and she answered 15. Oh good, the lady said, because our age limit is 15, but since you had your mom with you it is okay..

MOM!!!! Apparentely I am 31 going on 41.. lol lol lol

Yesterday I went into town to do some "window shopping" (yeah right! lol ) I wore a floral cotton dress with a red cardigan and matching knitted hat. My hair was curled with a victory roll on one side.
I was browsing when I noticed two girls glancing at me and laughing. Fearing this was another case of "lets make fun of the vintage girl" I simply ignored them. As I passed, however, one of the girls tapped me on the shoulder, saying how glamorous the clothes were and that I looked a lot like Dita Von Teese! Awww. I then went into John Lewis to stock up on sewing thread and the lady on the counter also said that I reminded her of a young version of dita von teese.

Wow, twice in one day! Personally I cannot see the resemblence but as I think Dita is absolutely stunning that's probably the nicest compliment a person could give me :D

Most people (young folks, that is) don't really understand the vintage look, but I do get told that I look nice. From people who are older, I get told that I look like a movie star. haha

Tofu,

A lot of us post in the "What Are You Wearing Today?" thread over in General Attire. There's years of pictures of the men and the women of the boards showing off their daily style. :)

When I was in school, I used to get really unnerving stares, but mostly from the sorority/fraternity types. But I always get lovely compliments from older men, which I certainly appreciate.

The most interesting comment I've ever received was during a writing session, when another writer asked me why I dressed the way I did. I then asked her the same question, to which she replied, "This is what I like. But you can't honestly enjoy dressing like that."

Some people just don't get it. Haha.

Hehe, hardly! I think it is more the style that people are referring to, rather than any actual resemblence - for many people Dita is the only person they know of who wears vintage style. It is a sweet compliment none the less :) .

As Lenore says, you should definitely look at the 'What Are You Wearing Today' thread. I always love looking at the photos - everyone looks so gorgeous!

heard the sweetest comments yesterday, as i was walking down the hallway a guy at work said "here comes that 50s girl" (i actually dress more 40s) and then he said you remind me of Marilyn Monroe but wiht black hair. and another older gentleman said good morning to me in the hallway and then stopped me and told me "i just want to let you know how radiant you are, you have a classy style that you dont see anymore, you just glow and are absolutley beautiful" well needless to say i was extremely flattered and it made my day.;)

My world really has come full circle - this weekend I posted a photo of my new hat on Facebook. My Mother commented on FB if she could borrow it to wear to one of her sorority functions.

My Mother has ALWAYS thought I dressed funny, and rightly so in most cases, though I believe the vintage is her favorite because at least it's classic.

Maybe "H-E-double toothpicks" really has frozen over?

Last week a lady (a very stylish lady I will add but not vintage wearing) at my work came up to me to tell me she really loved my 1940's look, she said to me you dress in vintage every day don't you? My reply was thank you so much and yes for the most part I do - except funny thing was that I was not wearing a stitch of vintage on that particular day but when I am not in vintage I go for a very classic look. I pointed out to her that I did not have on any vintage at all right then and she said it still looks vintage and it looks great! I have worn my hair in victory rolls several times to work and she said you even wear a 40's hairstyle, she said you really live don't you? I said yes that I do. She tells me several years ago when she used to live in California she wore vintage all of the time so I asked her what her favorite era was and she said she just loves the 40's. It was so nice to get this compliment because my work place is very casual because hundreds of people work there but we are not seen by the public however there are lots of very "different" looking people there also because we are not seen by the public. So I imagine to most I fit right in there in the sea of different looking people and I am totally fine with that.

i think the only compliments i've had are from my ma and my cousin. :( i guess it is cause i can't afford a lot of vintage clothes on pocket money!

Or maybe i just look stupid, haha....

And this person wants to be a writer? With so little empathy, they will write LOUSY stories.

Just because they don't like it, they can't conceive that you do? The mind boggles at their egotism.

Most people compliment me, but one time when I was walking by a group of Abercrombie and Fitch clones wearing a pair of heels, one of them snickered 'Shes so full of herself!' Because apparently in my town, wearing heels makes you 'full of yourself'. But surprisingly, that didn't make me feel down, i actually walked with my head held higher!
