...Themes from "Show Boat"

Was watching this last night. No, I was not AT this concert in Kansas City to see it live, but a mutual friend of mine and the pianist (virtuoso Frederick Hodges) WAS- and caught it all on video to share. Most selections performed at the concert are now up on YouTube, check out tdub1941 for more.

78s to try to remember something I couldn't possibly forget by...

First up, it's 1933 with Leon Belasco and his Hotel St. Moritz Orchestra offering a great Dubin/Warren song that got unceremoniously shoved out the back door of "Footlight Parade," "Sittin' On A Backyard Fence." Chick Bullock meows the vocal.

Next, ahead to 1937 and Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, with the Lombardo Trio pleading "I Wanna Be In Winchell's Column." Well, fine, but I'm a Dorothy Kilgallen reader myself.

You're Still in My Meatbox

The meatbox is playing You're Still In My Heart (1932) by the Casa Loma Ork, even tho I haven't heard or seen the cassette tape I had it on for over 20 years now.

Kenny Sargent sang it. He was good.

78s to wait for another tree limb to be blown thru the window by --

Starting off the day in 1930 with the Duncan Sisters, Vivian and Rosetta, in their signature song from the MGM picture "It's A Great Life," "I'm Following You." Rosetta growls out some ferocious scatting as her sister wails along in close harmony -- it's not quite the Mills Brothers imitating a whole orchestra, but it's impressive and disturbing just the same.

Next, Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra in 1929, with a snappy version of "Wishing And Waiting For Love," from the Vitaphone picture "Broadway Babies." The vocal is by the mysterious Belle Mann, who dubbed for Alice White in the picture, and would do so again in "Show Girl In Hollywood" before fading off into obscurity.

The Smiths- "Ask" ("it's the bomb that will bring us together...")

"This Charming Man" is IMO the definitive Smiths song.

I love Mr. Shankly. It really catches Morrisey's cheeky - and sometimes even arrogant - approach to lyrics. Johnny Marr's rhythm guitar work is great, too.

Mr. Shankly
-----------

Frankly, Mr Shankly, this position I've held
It pays my way and it corrodes my soul
I want to leave you will not miss me
I want to go down in musical history

Frankly, Mr Shankly, I'm a sickening wreck
I've got the 21st century breathing down my neck
I must move fast, you understand me
I want to go down in celluloid history Mr Shankly

Fame, fame, fatal fame
It can play hideous tricks on the brain
But still I rather be famous
Than righteous or holy, any day, any day, any day

But sometimes I'd feel more fulfilled
Making Christmas cards with the mentally ill
I want to live and I want to love
I want to catch something that I might be ashamed of

Frankly, Mr Shankly, this position I've held
It pays my way and it corrodes my soul
Oh, I didn't realise that you wrote poetry
I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry Mr Shankly

Frankly, Mr Shankly, since you ask
You are a flatulent pain the arse
I do not mean to be so rude
But still, I must speak frankly, Mr Shankly, give us money

Suzanne - Gus Arnheim & Ork, waxing in Hollywood in 1933.
Bouncy wouldja-like-to-take-a-walk tune with snapping patter from the latest edition of the Rhythm Boys.

Go to the link to preview the whole 2-CD set - no snippets! It's really a good one for us late 20s-early 30s types.
