Cold Cream- Brands and advice!

Cold Cream

I purchased expensive department store products for skin care and found none of them were worth the money. In fact one line I tried that cost 100.00 for the 3 items caused my face to blister and swell up overnight and my eyes were tiny little peeps. I took it back and got a refund. My mother whose was in her 70's at the time told me my grandmother used only Ponds cold cream on her face and she had beautiful skin. Sooooo, it has been cold cream for me ever since and it works like a dream. I have had many ladies tell me I have beautiful skin and what do I use. PONDS that it, lucky for me I have a very even skin tone with no splotches or red spots. I'm sure some store brands would work as well since cold cream is made from pretty basic ingredients. I too love Burts Bees products and Nivea as well. I'm going to try some the the BB's cream you ladies have mentioned. I also found while reading fashion mag reviews that suave moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is as good as the top selling expensive brands. (Factory testing of products, low to high end in cost.) I use it and love it. But only the moisturizing as far as I know was recommended. Always looking for ways to save $$ but not sacrifice quality.

The next time I stray from my beloved Cold Cream and Witch Hazel, someone tackle me! Ha ha.

I have (alas!) been putting my vintage routine aside for the past several months. I got lazy, stopped sleeping in pin curls, and well, just got wrapped up in the modern world!

I'm turning 30 on Sunday and I've decided to reimplement my vintage lifestyle since it makes me happy! Life is too short not to be happy every day. I bought Ponds and Witch Hazel again and will be using that from now on. I need a routine to stick to and this is by far the least expensive AND most effective! What more could a girl ask for?

I bought the Pond's before catching up on this thread. I do believe once I'm through with that I'll pay more attention to my ingredients and go with Walgreens or get the Jergens version.

I still haven't solved the eewy washcloth mystery and the oil that stays in the cloth. I will be buying dark washcloths (though I'm too lazy to embroider "makeup" on them, haha). With my oily/combo breakout prone skin, I don't think tissuing off the CC would be ideal for me, but maybe I'm wrong.

Coming back into my vintage-ness has made me realize how out of practice I am...I couldn't get my liquid liner right this morning and my pincurls weren't going right! Time to get back into it and back on par with where I was.

I have used the Boot's Traditional Cold Cream...not as easy to spread but a delight to use nonetheless.

Ponds for Extra dry skin.

Hey Ladies,
Last week I went through all of the beauty threads and came home from Walgreens with quite a few recommended products. I bought the ponds for extra dry skin because mine is, and I have ruddy red patches- thought it was rosaecea at one time- but its not- anyhow. I wash my face with the warm cloth put the cream on and leave it over night.
In a week Ive noticed a difference. In the morning I again use a warm cloth and then use witch hazel to remove any oil and to use as a toner then I put on my day moisturizer. It seems to work for me so thanks to all of you for having such great (and easy on the budget) beauty fixes.

I used to frequent many beauty and skincare forums which took a pretty toll on my pocketbook. I'm embarressed to say how much I spent in one haul on skincare that was such a waste of $$! I was using a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, eye cream, acne medicine (two different kinds), night cream, day cream...it was insane. On these forums we'd trade regimen ideas and tips, it's amazing that we even got out the door to work in the morning. I counted one gal put over a dozen products on her face in the AM, plus wait times (letting AHA, BHA go for 30 minutes, etc.) not to mention all the night time stuff she slathered on. Peptides, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, vetavitavegimin, chemical peels, scrubs, masks, serums, lotions, creams...wow!

I'm so appreciating the simpler skincare regimen. My skin cleared up after two days of going back to cold cream and witch hazel toner. I also picked up Boot's Restore and Renew serum for some anti-ageing, as I've now hit the big 3-0 this past week. There is something to be said that the lovely older ladies in our lives have gorgeous skin after using ponds or jergens for decades!

I did pick up a jar of the Jergen's all purpose skin cream from WalMart last night. It comes in a really large tub and I'm interested to try it once my small jar of Ponds runs out.

Ok, so far I've tried Ponds Cold Cream, Queen Helene Triple Whipped Cleansing Cream and Boots Rose Cold Cream. Boots is by far my favorite but do the jars come any larger than 1.6 oz? I can see myself going through this jar very quickly.

Isn't Boots lovely? It's a great cleansing cream. I have never seen it in a jar larger than that tiny 1.6 oz. That's a big reason why I have gone with the more economical Ponds (to soon be replaced with Jergens). I prefer Boots though, hands down. It also doesn't leave my washcloths as oily as Ponds. And the scent is just wonderful, in my opinion.

A larger size would oh so grand!

I saw it... and I've placed an order!

A couple of months ago I read through this thread and decided to try the cold cream and witch hazel routine. At first my skin went through the normal rebellion over a change in product and I got a few breakouts, but I stuck with it and am so glad I did!

My skin has never looked or felt better in my adult life (I'm 37)! I'm embarrassed to say that sometimes I just caress my face (when no one is looking of course) because I can't get over how soft it is now.

My complexion was always so horrible, dry and flaky but oily at the same time, and it didn't seem to matter how much or how little products I used, it never improved. Add on top of that a very red, ruddy complexion, no fun. Not that the cold cream and witch hazel can change that part, but at least now that my flaky skin is gone it's easier to use foundation to cover up the redness.

My nightly routine now: After taking off mascara with Almay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Pads, I slather on the cold cream, and make sure I kind of "scrub" it in in a circular motion, leave it on for about 5 minutes, then wipe off using a warm wet washcloth. I rinse the washcloth out as much as possible and then do a second wipe of my face, this time gently scrubbing in a circular motion - very gently! - and that acts as an exfoliator, no need to use a separate product for that anymore!

After that I saturate a cotton ball with pure witch hazel and swab my face and neck down, removing any leftover oily residue and anything the cold cream didn't get. After my face dries I use on Olay Night Firming Cream moisturizer and call it good.

For washing my face in the shower every morning I've switched to a creamy cleanser instead of a harsh foaming one, and I believe that has helped as well. I've been using St. Ives Fresh Makeup Remover and Facial Cleanser - it has mineral oil in it just like the cold cream so that must be the key ingredient. I don't use witch hazel in the morning but after the shower I use Olay Daily Moisturizer with spf 15 sunblock before putting on any makeup.

With this new routine it took me awhile to get used to feeling "greasy" after using the cold cream, even after using the witch hazel. But then I realized that I was so used to my face being dry, despite using a moisturizer, that what I was mistaking for greasy was just normal hydration.

As for greasy goopy washcloths, I just rinse mine out with as hot of water as I can stand after wiping the second time and let it air dry; I can get away with using the same wash cloth two days in a row before needing to change to a different one. I kind of "scrub" the washcloth down using my fingers, if that makes sense. Also, none of my washcloths are "good" so I don't care if they get stained. I've had no problem with them getting clean - clean as in, no longer dirty/greasy - in a normal hot water laundry load. As I said, stains I don't care about with these.

I have definitely developed an allergy to the Boots cold cream. I just took my make up off and now my eyes are stinging and the skin all over my face feels tingly and swollen. Why would this just happen?

My eyes have always reacted like that to the Boots cold cream, and in fact, also to Pond's. I never get it close to my eyes! Wonder which ingredient is doing this?

My mother always removed cold cream with a kleenex, then splashed warm water on her face and patted it dry with a towel. This avoids the greasy washcloth problem.

I can't use cold ream of any brand near my eyelids. It's a drag as it was a great makeup remover. But it is just too much. Maybe your eyes just had enough!

Instead, for eye makeup removal, plain mineral oil or Albolene (which is like pure mineral oil solidified, better melting temperature than Vaseline) has worked out fine for me. It doesn't irritate me. I think cold cream has parrafin in it and that can be a problem.

As a mom to a kid in diapers, one day I had a tub of baby wipes hanging around my vanity and I used a couple out of curiosity. I've never gone back. Pampers sensitive. I buy in bulk.

So I must admit I had a "smack palm of hand on forehead" moment (to be read: a "duh" moment) while removing my cold cream.

I tissued off first then followed with a warm washcloth. I'm sure this will aid in abating the greasy washcloth problem.

I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner...ha ha.:eusa_doh:

In the early 30s, Pond's actually had their own brand of tissues for removing cold cream. They specifically marketed it to the people who didn't want the greasy washcloths.

Nothing is new under the sun, huh?
