Ginger Rogers wore something like that in The Major and the Minor, I have a pic somewhere. It's like a long hairnet with sequins.

Lovely! I've worn my snoods and I've been getting nothing but compliments, though I did get a lunch lady, but at least they said "vintage lunch lady" haha.

I plan on ordering more (htie, purple, yellow, dark green, navy, etc.). They are quite comfortable. Made from modern material, yes, but I hope to try my hand at crocheting my own once I get more experience.

What were the reason's for wearing snoods? my gramma almost always wore one (I thought they were to keep hair out of food

)

Were they ornamental in nature? or practical such as to keep hair out of the way? I ask because I think a snood may be something I would be able to don without much difficulty. Oh and lastly, how are the secured? bobby pins?

Shopgirl check out post 83 and 84 of this thread. There is info there. As for cafeteria ladies, those are hair nets, not snoods. Snoods combine function and fashion.

I scored a handful (probably 10) vintage snoods just last week, for free! I think they are probably 30s-40s. The material is very silky, maybe rayon? Definitely not cotton. All different colors, too.

Now I just need to grow my hair out to fill them! lol

would any of you care to help snood me?
I have been looking on ebay and can't find any... seems alot of the indie type sellers try to pass off these turban looking things instead and that is definately not what i'm looking for

I just watched Gone with the Wind this weekend and Scarlett was snood-tastic.

I can't seem to get it to look decent (decent meaning the way I want it to look!)...maybe if I had bangs it would be easier to style the front???

That looks very similar! Except, it was made out of a black netting....I am still hunting for a picture!

i have a vintage one made of a very fine netting and covered with gold sequins. I will try to get a better picture of it for you if you think it's what you are looking for. It would be easy to make this up if you found a soft netting.

OMIGOD THAT'S IT!!!! I am sooooo jealous it is gorgeous! That is exactly what I was talking about, it was such a fine netting that it really didn't look very snood-like, and the one in the film was covered in rhinestones instead of sequins....wow, that is lovely! But, would I use a normal snood pattern to make one? I would love to find a vintage one...but they seem so rare.

well, a snood is basically an oval/egg sort of shape with (usually) elastic all around the edges. This one has a hard little cap at the top covered in sequins, then the top of the snood is gathered into the cap and the entire edge of the snood is a casing with elastic in it.

I have been busy with my crochet hook and whipped this up over the last few weeks while getting over a miserable cold and some other issues:

based loosely on this pattern with a few minor modifications. Made from three small balls of Knit-Cro-Sheen Metallic crochet thread in Ecru/Pearl.

well, i've only just tried it on with un-styled hair but it's basically a pouch that ties at the top of the head. I will definitely need to use bobby pins/kirby grips to hold the ties on top. It is not as practical as the larger pouch snoods that have elastic all the way around.

once i get well and have an opportunity to wear it with styled hair and make up I will take a picture!

I'm not sure how that would work? My part still shows when I'm wearing a snood and that's where regrowth shows.
