Floto luggage.

My FLOTO IMPORTS overnighter/weekender in Italian leather, crafted in Tuscany, with a lovely vintage canvassy liner (no cheap nylon!). I love it and it's been to the USA three times, dragged around France and the UK and just looks better for it. Just the right size for taking 'on board' the aircraft too.

I can tell you as a one-time owner of a Saddleback Briefcase, they are EXTREMELY durable. Just be aware that they are quite heavy. And listening to all these airline damage stories would make me very nervous to check anything so nice! I've been drooling over their Suitcase for a couple years now, but would be so scared of it getting ruined, it'd probably never leave the house!

Here is my overnight bag. I found it in an antique store for $20.00.
It’s VERY heavy cowhide, and completely leather lined.
After several applications of Lexol the leather is virtually like new.
There are no manufacturer’s marks on it, so I’m guessing it was made in the 40’s or 50’s.
If anyone knows for sure, let me know.

So...

So did you ever decide on a bag, Valhson?

J Peterman used to have a Gladstone, but I couldn't find it just now.

I've considered a Saddleback leather small suitcase, myself, to use as a carry-on and overnight bag for car trips, but I've yet to commit the $$$ to it.

Just last week, though, I purchased this satchel in Guatemala for only $20. It's nice, heavy-duty leather and seems reasonably well-made. I don't think I could pull off using it in the States, but it'll be perfect for my upcoming trip to Italy. For the price, certainly, it can't be beat!

I've used a Saddleback briefcase for about two years, and it has held up splendidly. They are heavy - I think having three closure straps is overkill even for a bag that advertises overkill, but it's sturdy for sure.

I've also been using a J.W. Hulme leather duffel for over a year, as my weekend bag. It's made in the U.S. and I consider it a lifetime investment. The detailing on the Hulme is above reproach.

I did. But alas it is gone due to the wife handing it over as a present to an Uncle. Long story.

Sorry it has been a while since I logged on. I was in China for the last month + with family.

I ended up ordering the Floto Venezia as it seemed reasonable. However the company I went through was out of them and offered me a replacement bag. It was a Pellavera? Italian made, looked exactly as the floto only the inside was lined in pig skin. I think the value was much higher than the Original order and the Manager made the mistake up to me.

After about a week in China we realized we forgot the New Year gift for one of the five uncles. As he is a business traveler the beautiful wife decided it was good that I hand over the bag to him as a present. Pretty expensive present if you ask me but he was happy and we did spend a lot of time traveling around the country side together so it worked out.

I am thinking of putting in that order for the Venezia again for a weekender. I am starting to lean away from the saddleback styling for what ever reason though I still like their designs.

I will pose pics as soon as I get one.

Go to ePay and look up Floto bags. Very well made and priced pretty decently. I have one of their toilet (Dop?) bags and think it's very well made and looks great. They have some great weekend and carry-on bags too.

One more option is Piel. I have their saddle tan carpet bag and have used it quite often. The leather is not as heavy as the bags you've listed, but at 1/4 the price it's a cheaper alternative that will give you many years of service.

O.K all,
I know this is kind of military related but it also covers the "overnight bag" area. I am looking for what was called an "AWOL bag", not the Viet Nam era small bag but the one that looks like the old gym bags we had as kids but in O.D canvas. Thanks!

Gladstone Bag

I recall reading about civillians traveling in WWII and having a leather bag to carry most things in for the trip. The style was called a "Gladstone" bag and if you googel it you'll find a bunch of them in leather and also canvas in a variety of sizes from a bunch of different makers. I saw one from Coach that was the cause of some covetting and is on the If I Win the Lottery list.

Well,

I got the Floto Venezia on Thursday and used it this weekend on a trip to New York. It is great! I must say I was a little surprised at how dark the leather was compared to photos but I am not one to complain as it is perfect in my book!

I was really careful about what I packed and made sure it was light and reasonable as I was walking a bit with it once I got to NY. But alas, on the way home, I had so much stuff, it was full as could be and was heavy like an anvil! Once I got back to DC, I had another walk of a mile in the light rain. Not a sign of issue from the bag. My arms, yes, but the bag, not a sign of anything. Now to make sure I don't abuse it anymore in the future could be a challenge.

I want to thank you guys for the help and responses. There were so many great options out there. It was a hard choice for me.

Now off topic... I was on the Acela coming back to DC and I was going to post about the bag and for some reason, Amtrak finds the lounge to be SPAM

I was a bit surprised by that.

I know you got your bag already but I wanted to mention Filson bags. They have a few bags that will work for overnight bags. I have the large duffel, which is much too large for overnights but it is made from heavy oiled canvas with thick leather straps and trim. There is a flap that snaps over the zipper to keep it safe. I've flown with this bag twice now and haven't had any mishaps yet.

Orvis Battenkill was mentioned. I picked up a couple of pieces at a thrift store, a garment bag and a Pullman style bag. I flew with these pieces as well as the Filson over Christmas and didn't have any troubles. The Orvis is very nice and is made with thicker materials than the L.L. Bean luggage I have.

The good thing about traveling with both Filson and Orvis luggage is that they both have lifetime warranties on their goods. If anything happens, just send it back and they will repair or replace it for you.

I guess that there is two good things about traveling with Filson and Orvis, it is very easy to recognize your luggage coming around on the carousel. The tan of the Filson or the green of the Orvis looks nothing like the red and black bags the other people are trying to identify.
