Duluth Trading Co - AWOL Bag

anon`

One Too Many
It's small and not terribly detailed, but they have an actual photo of the AWOL bag up now. Underneath the drawing is a little image-button that says "View Photo" and allows you to do just that! I don't think it looks too bad. I wouldn't be embarrased to carry one onto a train, at least.

Or, you can just try to be really patient, because I'm seriously giving serious thought to buying one! ;)

I've bought a lot of stuff from Duluth Trading company over the years, mainly the carpenters aprons which last me about a year or so. Their stuffs all pretty well made. But for $180 it would have been nice if they'd used a nice brass zipper.

At that price I'd have expected a brass zipper, though I guess it would be possible to have one fitted if / when the supplied pastic wore out... Looks like a nice bag. I'm always on the lookout for a doctor's type bag like that, maybe brown and a black. It's not something I have sufficient call for for it to be worth the expenditure, though....at least, not unless it came with a decent shoulder strap.

Duluth Trading Co. - I agree for $180 it should have a brass zipper. If the leather were decent it may be worth having a brass zipper installed. Glad to hear their other products are well made. I've almost ordered from them before.

Flotoimports products look really nice; the Trastevere duffle would be about the same size as the AWOL bag. It's $80 more. That may eat some of the difference of having a brass zipper installed.

I bought one a while back, and for the price it's......okay. Not great quality leather, more like the dreaded pleather IMHO.

This one looks different though so the quality might have gone up. Customer service is very good.

Hope this helps.

I'd echo CoonCatBob and Vintage68. I haven't gotten this bag, but I've gotten quite a few items from Duluth Trading Co., and just everything has been of pretty decent quality. I've also found their customer service to be outstanding.

A tailor or maybe shoemaker could make that upgrade I am sure.

I've also had great experience with Duluth Pack company. Theres another maker in St. Paul called J.W. Hulme. They make outstanding bags. They use to make bags for Orvis. Here's their info.: www.jwhulmeco.com

Any updates on the AWOL bag? I have read some reports that say the leather isnt as nice as the picture indicates.

I need a bag for a trip to Australia in June. Want something kind of vintage looking.

Thanks in advance.

I have had my AWOL bag for several years now, and I have been very pleased with it. I have found no problems at all with the leather - it holds up well and ages well. The scrapes that any such bag gets during normal use just give it a nice character rather than making it look shabby. I have not seen any signs of wear that indicate any potential failure points. If I were to lose mine today, I'd have another one on order tomorrow without any hesitation. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a high quality vintage-look bag with a reasonable price.

Seemingly...yes, but not the kind any of us would want to hear. Tempted by "Colonel's" picture, I just followed the original link at the top of this thread...to find a note on the page "THIS ITEM IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE."

Assuming this is not some sort of a glitch....it looks like bad news, and bad timing for your trip to Oz...

I have no idea why the BBCode doesn't work on this forum sometimes. Oh well. Try the link below.

Thank you, Colonel: Followed that link, and there it was. I'm tempted...but then there's the FLOTO bag Paddy pointed us to; a third more in price...ah, decisions, decisions. Probably I'll decide "some other day." But who knows?

Thanks again,

How would it be with...a HEAVY load?

Dear Colonel,
I'm thinking the Duluth bag MIGHT be a nice range bag to throw my shells into when headed out to the range. But, as I'm sure you can imagine, a couple hundred rounds, even of 28g, is pretty heavy.

You won't be held to answer for it if you guess wrong, it goes without saying: but do you think the Duluth bag would hold up under that kind of use?

Thanks in advance,
"Skeet"
