Is it unusual to have multiple Panama Monte Cristi's? Or is money better spent in getting a single one and using the remaining money to get a nice dress fedora?

You should only have enough hats that you wear them all regularly...

You should send the rest to me.

I'm new here to this whole hat thing, but from experiance I'll tell you that you should buy an inexpensive starw hat first (spend 25$ on a Fedora style) and then once your used to caring for it, keeping it clean, free from damage, et-cetera, then spend a buck fiftey on a nice hat.

You probably, need a beater anyway, that you can get relativley dirty.

I guess I should have thought this through before posting my original question in this forum. :eusa_doh:

I think the real question I should be seeking input on is 'how does a guy manage to acquire a collection of fine hats on limited resources'?

Why not? One lower-quality for knocking about on sunny days, picknicking, going to the beach, etc, and one high-quality for when you need a knockout straw hat (tropical wedding?).

If you get one really good one you won't be able to stop. Montecristi are addictive. Really. See my avatar.
I earned money over the years and bought some fine MC. In the meanwhile I got a taste for nice dress felt fedoras and bought a couple too.
Investment in quality will never be regretted.
Just try to keep your new obsession in limits -impossible at times- and you shall see how good it feels to be a dress hat polygamist.
Yes buy a Cuenca hat too, which is ideal for everyday use in the summer as a straw hat.

Well, here is where you're in luck! You could have chosen to be a collector of Ferraris, or you might have been a Ducatisti, or maybe you might have had a penchant for fine wines. Relative to these, our beloved fedoras are fairly cheap. You could have two of the finest available for less than a grand. How long does it take you to save up that much discretionary scratch? Now the finest panamas might take you well beyond that figure, so my advice on those is listen, learn, and look. Then you'll know what to do.
