:( I tired to recreate the whole Marilyn Monroe look and when I was close to being done, my husband walked in a started laughing. He said I looked like a teenager playing in her mom's make up and that I looked silly. Now he loves Marilyn, so thats not the issue. I just could not pull it off. Now part of me wonders if its because I am chunky or if its just because I don't have the right make up. I did snap a pic on my camera and I look silly, he's right. I'm going to try to upload the picture, could you all give me pointers? I'm not used to using much more make up than tinted moisturizer and a little mascara. Once I was done and powdered my skin felt dry and icky, my eye liner was running becasue it made my eyes water so badly. Sigh. Help!

Upload your picture to a hosting site such photobucket. Move your cursor over the picture on the site and you will see various lines of information. Copy and paste the IMG code onto your Lounge post. Then everyone will see it. ;)

Your hubby definitely could have that worded nicer, even if you think you look silly too.

I am no expert but I'm sure the talented ladies here would be glad to give you some pointers! I'm sure there are already threads here that could suit your needs. Definitely check out the thread about wearing flattering colors. It could be that the lipstick you chose was the wrong tone for your skin.

PS. Beauty comes in all sizes so being 'chunky' has nothing to do with it!

Aww thanks for the kind comments. My husband really isn't a bad guy, he was mostly teasing I think. lol He tells me daily how pretty he thinks I am, even though I have gained 100 pounds!

Ok here's the mishap

You dont look weird, you just aren't use to seeing yourself with that much make up on. It has nothing to do with weight. You are attempting to wear a style of make up associated with someone else.

You are use to seeing Monroe with it, but not yourself. I think you look fine. Lovely.

Your makeup looks very nice to me! :) Maybe he's just not used to it.

About your skin being dry - did you use moisturizer beneath the foundation? (It looks like you have nice skin, so you may find that you don't even need lots of foundation to get the "look", just your tinted moisturizer and a little powder.)

Thanks. I did moisturize before hand, maybe I was a tad heavy handed with the powder. My complextion looks kind of ruddy to me and the bags under my eyes are so much more prominent with the paler makeup. Maybe the tanner look is better for me? I have been very self conscious since I have put on 100 lbs, being 230 pounds has really taken its toll on me! I suppose I was wanting a flawless look like Lady Day or jsands or xitsvivx, or really any of you lovey ladies . I just don't think I achieved that.

I think you look great! It just looks strange when we're accustomed to another look, you know?

If you want some great basic info on layering moisturizer/foundation/powder grab one of Kevin Aucoin's books. His "Making Faces" also has a great step by step for Marilyn-style makeup.

The most important thing that I'd recommend here though is not trying to completely imitate a look, but using that look for inspiration and playing with it until you find out what makes it your own :)

It's the colors. (Weight doesn't have anything to do with it.) A pinker lipstick, lighter eyebrow pencil, and neutral colored eye shadow would work better. You're so fair and low-contrast that anything bright or dark will really pop. And it might be that a dramatic look doesn't suit your personality. I'm thinking ingenue, and lighter, more subtle colors are better suited to that style.

You're very fair. I think a sort of a more rose-brown lip (more rose than brown!) and a softer eye shadow with more lashes but a more natural brow might look better on you. You have such a wonderful delicate complexion.

Also I think your brows are a bit thin for Marilyn, but don't go dark! Just shade them with a touch of toasty-brown shadow.

Awww! You are all so sweet, thank you! I think I am the lucky one, my husband is amazing.
I went out tonight and bought some new make up. I'm going to give it a shot in the morning again with different colors and see how it comes out.
I'm so excited thatI found such a fantastic group of people. Thanks again, I'll be back to update later!;)

I agree with Lady Day - if you suddenly try a new look, it takes a while to decide whether it does suit you.

My husband doesn't like me in red lipstick, which I wear about 4 days a week, so I tend to put it on after I have left the house, so he doesn't have to be traumatised by the sight.

I think you look lovely too. I remember when I first started wearing red lipstick it looked strange to me at first, I thought I didn't suit it, but it was just a matter of finding the right red. Just keep experimenting and you will find what suits you best. :)

I can't see anything to laugh at in that picture! You look great, I personally don't even think the shades suggested could suit you more than the ones you have already tried. Honestly I was imagining you caked in makeup with thick kohl and scarlet lips - that is a million miles away from my idea of too much makeup and not remotely silly! Persevere, you'll soon get used to the idea of eyeliner and lipstick, and it'll become second nature!

I agree with Paisley, a change of colors would work. Because you mostly go natural, you want to start with more natural, softer colors. If you haven't played around with colors before, then it will take some experimenting or a visit to a high-end make-up counter for a make-over. You don't have to buy their make-up, but it will give you an idea of what colors work for your skin tone. My sister never wears make-up, unless it's a very formal occasion and it never looks good because she's had the same colors for 10 years and never tries anything else.
