Do you remember the Toyota truck/landcruiser ads? Everyone who ever wanted to go on Safari in Africa flipped over to Toyota. I miss my Toyota Jeep, she was really ugly, only vehicle that could compare was a Dodge Military 4X4.

What's the saying when preparing food? 50% of the meal is taste, 50% is presentation?[huh]

You are right Tom. Partly right. Advertising is getting talked about - among other things.

Such as reaching the mind and hearts of people, by telling them a great story, which is singleminded, engaging and surpricing.

In my book these ads are just not singleminded, they doesn't even engage me and I am not the least surpriced.

But - hey - we don't have to love the same things.

I have seen 1 of the ads, BUT right now Toyota needs to provide a different message Solid Citizen

Elegance is GREAT mechanical functions/safety is BETTER!

Prius brake problems aside, most Toyotas are extremely reliable. Mine just turned over 70,000 miles and I've never had a major problem with it. Most cars would be starting to fall apart about now.

software glitch.

I live in a city where the newest toyota factory in north america was built not counting the moth balled one, where we are hoping that plant would pull out of the recession in this county. Then this happens, from what i have read, its got nothing to do with floor mats, your throttle is electronic not a cable like in my studebaker or my wife 20 year old buick. That throttle sends a signal to the full injection now on most models there is a back up to the softhware if the brake is on when the gas is on, the throttle stops, someone decided to save some money and not bother with that on toyotas , new models will have this but older ones wont, and one in a million under the right conditions some glitch in the software might cause it take off, and most of u would have the swift thought to turn the key off, that said other than this glitch they make fine cars, but there is too many people out of work and i have usually always bought american my gmc van has 370, ooo kilometers on it as of this week, made in maryland i think , my wifes twenty year old buick was made here in Canada in oshawa and my 50 year old studebaker was made in southbend ind. So my opinion if its a new toyota go ahead they will have fixed that real problem by now and heck now there is going to be some deals like never before. 59lark

Personally, I found the car being advertised to be jarringly out of sync with the atmosphere of the ad. It's as if Toyota meant to produce a clone of the '47 Fleetline, but ran out of time and slipped in the Avalon instead.

Further, the actor delivers the line about the navigation system too quickly, and the actress with the following line is so quieti still haven't figured out what she says.

Speaking of Jeeves and Wooster, the girl in the commercial is distinctly(maybe a bit unpleasantly) reminiscent of Madeline Bassett as played in that series.

I think they missed a chance by not having "Avalon" (co-written Al Jolson) playing during the advert.

Most falling apart after 70K? What are you doing to 'em?

With routine maintenance, most cars last well over 100K. Toyotas, recent spat of software issues aside, tend to last up to 200K on a pretty regular basis. The '97 Avalon that my brother is driving now (and me before him, and my sister before me, and some random lady before that...) is up to around 155K or so these days. No issues, other then the back passenger door only opening from the outside.

Just about any car these days will go 200K miles, or more, if carefully maintained and driven. My 10 year old Ford has 184K miles and has required a total of $50 in repairs the whole time.

Regarding the Toyota Avalon commercials, I think they're spot on for the consumer the Avalon is aimed at. Most Avalon buyers are over 60 and fondly remember the times so nicely depicted in these ads. And for those too young to remember...these are "feel good" ads...something very needed at Toyota these days.

BTW, the reference to "Jet Smooth Ride" in the airliner commercial is a lift from Chevrolet. Chevy advertised the original Jet Smooth Ride on 1960-67 full-size Chevrolets. C'mon Toyota...you can be more original than that! But since Chevy hasn't used the tag-line for more than 40 years, I guess it's fair game.

Regarding the Jet Smooth Ride, my Grandfather bought a new Chevy Impala in 1960. Buying a new car was a big deal back then so he took the whole family for a first ride. I remember (at age 9) being very excited that I was about to experience the famous Jet Smooth Ride.

It reminds me of the 1939 Milwaukee Road "Hiawatha", but in a color scheme reminiscent of the B&O "Martha Washington."

The whole shebang is very Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, until that Toyota shows up. As I said before, it's jarring.

I would say they probably used this one as a model. I don't know that, but yes, you should be proud of yourself.
