I'd love to own a "dress" fedora one day, perhaps with a feather to give it some additional "formality," if you will. I don't own a fedora with a feather, but I don't think I would wear it under particularly casual circumstances, times like then I'd prefer to wear ones without a feather. Regarding formal hats in general, I don't think I'd have a homburg with a feather on it, that's where I draw the line, but I would accept it on a fedora that I use for dressier events, or even when the mood strikes me to wear it anytime.

If there's not much contrast between the body and ribbon, I go with a feather. If there is contrast, I take it out.

My vintage Dobbs Royal Coachman had a small red and black feather when it arrived and I've left it in. Otherwise, I go featherless.

I have a 50s Brent that came with a feather. I figured if that feather has been there 50+ years, why should I remove it? It has been in that ribbon longer than I have been alive. None of my other hats have feathers.

Every hat I have I have removed the feather except for one, a very formal light to mid grey Dobbs fed, this I cant seem to wear with anything casual.
Teamed with my mid length wool and cashmir overcoat over a suit works well for me, thats about it for feathers for me.
