What does the inside look like? If it’s pounced as nice as the outside some folks have had fortune turning the hat inside out. That requires a lot of work.

Careful...careful with the sandpaper. Easy to flatspot and ruin a hat even if you think you are careful especially in a stressed spot, even more so on a vintage crease line.
I’d save that for last. Might try a Magic Eraser first, etc.
