Used to be one of the Carefuls, until I realized that it didn't make a lot of sense for me to own something I never wear.
Now I'm an Integrator, except on a day like today when the wind nearly tore the hat off my head as soon as I stepped outside.
Assuming that I can't bring anything back with me...
I'd eat at a few small diners and lunch counters, catch a matinee or two at one of the downtown cinemas, spend the early evening in the Press Club, talking to as many Winnipeg Tribune reporters as I can...
Knowing me, I'd probably spend...
My wife quietly tolerates most of my eccentricities, hats are no exception. She's not too thrilled about some of my choices, but that's more of a disagreement of fashion (as opposed to style). More "I don't like that colour" than "I don't like you wearing hats."
She's more opposed to the...
Oh, if only I had but one interest... life would be less expensive. :)
I have a few hats, none of which cost more than eighty dollars. I started wearing them regularly not too long ago, because I realized that I was otherwise spending money for something only I would see -- and that made no...
Mo' Money
I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier, but I don't remember the last time I came across a one or two-dollar bill since the introductions of loonies and twonies...
I used to "shop" the same way as you, Dog. I would go out of my way to rebuff any contact from a salesperson ("Just browsing, thanks") because I didn't want to feel pressured. I wanted to go in, find what I want, buy it, and get out. (Fitting room? What's that?) The result, I would inevitably...
Not only is our main paper delivered by guys in cars, but they're unionized!
"Paperboy" was the first real job I had... hated it with a passion. Amazing how many stupid people would let their dogs roam free in the early morning...
I was never a fan of Sinatra's until I saw The Detective. An amazingly underplayed performance that I didn't think he was capable of. From then on, I've had nothing but respect for his talents.
Fave album: In The Wee Small Hours (love the album cover!)
Fave radio show: Rocky Fortune, an...
For most of the series, I too had no use for Pete Campbell. He was (and is?) little more than a sniveling weasel who had coasted through life based on who he was, and not what he was. He came from the old rich, probably never had to work a day in his life... the very definition of a silver spoon...
Great article! I had always pictured Emily Post as one of those toffee-nosed snots who sat in their exquisitely-paneled offices and dictated proper manners to the servantless. I certainly have more respect for her now.
I don't think it's the fault of the show -- it's because its on AMC, which doesn't have the viewership of HBO or Showtime.
Isn't it the highest rated program on AMC?
A couple of newspaper-related requests:
Deadline U.S.A. - Bogart as a crusading editor. Watched most of this one on AMC several months ago, but my VCR screwed up and I missed the last fifteen minutes. Great movie, and I'd love to own it.
Lou Grant - Watched one episode of this when I was...
"Ace Fedora" was the name of a comic book I wrote a few years back. "Ace" is the fictional private eye persona of a bored, daydreaming, Walter Mitty-ish accountant.
Replace "accountant" with "computer guy" and it's a pretty accurate description of me.
I spent several years living paycheque-to-paycheque, so being cheap just comes naturally to me. Having two young kids means I never go out, so no big loss there. :)
