Hi, if 58.5cm and 56.5cm are what your heads measure, I would go 59 and 57 for the traveller. You can always pad out the back of the band with some sponge or paper. Much better to be a size too big than too small.
If they were leather sweatband hats, I would even go 60 and 58. They shrink, and...
After being one of the most tyrannical places in the world during the pandemic, Australia has completely (quietly) turned 180 degrees and now is completely unrestricted except for some areas such as aged care and hospitals. There are no longer vaccine requirements for people entering Australia...
The akubra traveller has a softer felt that is somewhat crushable. Is it still possible to shape the hat with steam and/or water? The reason I ask is that I want to push the middle of the "telescope" up a bit so it doesn't touch the top of my head. cheers
yes, you need to use something of a fixed length to go from the crown and trace around the end of it. e.g. a flat ruler cut down to the length you want the brim to be all the way around. Or use a compass.
I folded a piece of cardboard over so the exposed part was the amount I wanted to trim off. Then I ran it around the brim with a pencil and cut on the line with tailor's scissors. Very easy. If you want round, you need to have something a fixed size to mark the brim a fixed distance from the...
Another vote for using distilled water in a spray bottle. Spray liberally on hat, the felt will soften. Bash your hat then wear it till it dries. The bash will then hold.
Steam also works but is much faster and I prefer to have more time to get the bash right.
A couple of weeks back, I trimmed the brim on the sombrero by about 1/2". Still a large brim but not as ludicrous. I just used sharp scissors and cleaned up with sandpaper.
I have 5 akubras:
Angler
Sombrero
Fed IV Deluxe
Campdraft
Cattleman
For me, it would have to be the Fed IV. It's versatile and can be worn formally, or for yard work. It's also tough and comfortable. I will miss my Sombrero the most, especially on a sunny day.
I think the style must have changed in 2011 then. The official akubra website says it was introduced in 2011.

In my opinion, one of the nicest hats Akubra makes is the Riverina, especially in the sand colour. I haven't seen a thread on this hat when looking for pictures and reviews before purchasing so thought I'd post some info.
It's a very wide brimmed hat, that comes unlined. The brown leather band...
