    Dr Martens

Just received a brand new pair of Solovair burgundy three hole Gibsons (Made in England) I found on the bay for £50. The quality knocks DM out of the park! Much heavier, thicker, flexible leather, much better finish, comfortable out of the box. I think they will easily outlive me! Gareth

Who is the most famous person you have met?

I once partnered Gene Pitney in a game of pool doubles. I broke, the other pair took their shot then Gene cleared the table! He explained to me later that other entertainers are keen on golf but he prefer the comfort of pool indoors! I also had a go on Jimi Hendrix's guitar while he was...

    Jacket re-waxing

I did my two old Barbour jackets a few years ago. Put the tin of wax in a pan of water (Bain Marie!) on very low heat on the stove to keep it melted. Quite relaxing really and I had a waterproof hand afterwards!

    Kitchen knives

I don't remember my parents having many kitchen knives here in the UK back in the late fifties. There was a carving knife, bread knife and paring knife. Can't remember any others. I do still remember my father sharpening the carving knife on the kitchen doorstep before every Sunday lunch!

    Has anyone passed/received a jacket to/from son/dad?

My son had my old Belstaff Trialmaster I used on the bike for years when it "shrank"! He wore it for many years after. He also had my old Welsh rugby jersey that shrank at the same time. Think he took the jersey to Australia when he emigrated! It's still going.

    Tramp Steamers

I have seen The Maggie. Some years ago now and can't remember much of it. Last TV version was from 1994 with Gregor Fisher as Para Handy. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0155450/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

    Tramp Steamers

My favourite steamer stories are the various tales of Para Handy, written as newspaper columns in the 1920's by Glasgow man Neil Munro about the captain and crew of the Vital Spark. Humorous tales of the Clyde Puffers that plied their trade along the Clyde and to the island such as Arran etc. At...

Ask a question, get an answer

I have one of their flat caps and am well pleased with it. It's my favourite of many I own. Mind you, it cost slightly more than the pork pie!

Shortening the sleeves on an Aero jacket

As you're in the UK, there's a bloke in Worcester that took in the shoulders and shortened the sleeves of an almost new Highwayman I bought on ebay a few years ago. He charged me about £50 if I remember. Did a very professional job. I took it to his shop as I live in Gloucester, not far from...

    Fake Shops

I keep getting Farcebook ads selling "Genuine" new Belstaff Panther leather jackets for £54 I think it was! They even have all the Belstaff photos from their site. I reckon most of those Farcebook ads are your fake shops. Gareth

    Experience with “Noble House”

I bought one of their Jagdflieger jackets in horse several years ago. After a few weeks, the main zip failed. Got back onto them and I had a new jacket in a week or so and they paid for the return. Their boss was quite entertaining on email as well! Not the best leather jacket I own but pretty...

    Wayward boot tongues

I have a pair of William Lennon's where the tongue wanders. I cut the two slits to run the laces through and it works fine. Doesn't look wrong or damage the boot. Gareth

    Superdry jackets???

The Superdry company started as a market stall in nearly Cheltenham. They made their money pretending to be Japanese! They moved from the outdoor stall to a shop called Cult Clothing before changing to the Superdry name. It was started by a local guy called Julian Dunkerton who sold the...
