It blew my mind last time I was in Ireland how nobody wore a hat in the rain, and it rained non-stop for a week. I'm heading to Dingle in June and have been considering bringing a straw to wear in the sun. At least a linen flat cap.
I've sold a few hats, but usually break even at best (with one notable exception). I got a small place so it behooves me to keep the collection down to a dozen. Never the less, I've been watching for a Mallory and this one came up on Etsy. Didn't last more than a few hours after I spotted it...
In the original The Razor's Edge (1946) Tyrone Power wears a stunning array of hats. Snap brim fedoras when he's dressed to hang with his upper class friends a beret when he becomes a working man in Paris; he arrives in India with a straw optimo. Clifton Webb, the snob, travels in a bowler but...
Been waiting to bust out this one - a Disney I bought in August. Pictures show it as brown, but it has a touch of olive in it and is very dark. It came with a center dent but I gave it a teardrop bash, which gave it a little more height at the pinch. I'll be sporting this one through the holiday...
Found the perfect pic for the cover of my about-to-be-released novel, a pissed-off looking Michael Collins, standing in the ruins of his childhood home after it was burned down by the black and tans, hands thrust in his pockets, glaring at the camera from under the brim of his hat.

Is Straw Season over yet?
Larry Mahan makes cowboy hats, but with the brim down I feel like I'm in an M. Somerset Maugham short story. Where's Sadie?
made from Royal Shantung, whatever that is, feels like paper. Tight diamond weave and effective vents. Light-weight but with a real leather...
Getting cool here, and I'm ready to put away the straws for the season. Here I am in combo mode. The shirt is Hawaii-esque from Izod. The hat is a Warwick "Bench Made".
Wasn't sure about this Double Eagle when it first arrived, but now I'm sold American. One of the best quality lids in my collection. Color's grown on me, darker then I'd thought. I steamed and stretched it a bit (it's 7 1/4 and I'm another size up), and gave it a new Teardrop bash with smaller...
Lucked out with this Adam Fifth Avenue. Great color, a true brown, and even though marked as a 7 1/4 it fits my 7 3/8 noggin just fine. 1 7/8 brim with an overwelt. No embossing on the black sweat/no factory tag. Leaving the bash and dents as it came, just giving a little gangster slant to the brim.
Disney Double Eagle. I'll admit I'm a little disappointed, was expecting a grey hat and got olive (I'm living in an alternate universe from RickP). And although I recently purchased a 7 1/4 that fit just right (I'm a 7 3/8), this 7 1/4 is small all around. But hey, if you never swing, you never...
Love my Towncraft - I let go of my homburgs (minor obsession) because the TCraft with its bound-brim, high crown, and (for me) generous brim became my go-to formal hat.
Disney! I just purchased an Adam at 7 1/4 and it fit (I usually go for the 3/8), so I decided to roll the dice again with this Disney Double Eagle. I asked the seller about the brim width (looks right for me - you know I like 'em stingier than broader) but he never wrote back. But looking at...
This one snuck up on me. I had just deleted my bookmarks of hats I was watching on the bay after pulling down my felts (boxed for summer) and telling myself, "I don't need any more hats." But I did have one I wanted to replace because the brim was a bit big for me (you could call me Trilby...
I've had this on my head a couple of times this season, but neglected to take any pics. So this will suffice as its debut. Excelsior Hats. Maybe Stan Lee had an interest? Love the shaped brim and floating sweat-band.
My one Toquilla straw, in a Cuenca (herringbone) weave. Cheap stretchy sweat band keeps the hat high on my poll in the heat but can be mashed down if the wind picks up. The 2" brim keeps it dignified in town and I can go from church to strand.
Got to the surfer's jetty and had to turn around --...
