That’s where I got my Bluegrass Green Cattleman that I use as my barbecue hat.

Could anyone who has both comment on the relative felt weight of Akubra Campdraft and Squatter?

That’s something I had wondered. I only have the Fed IV for comparison and relative felt thicknesses/densities is something to consider. I was up in Fukushima yesterday glad of the warmer felt, although I suspect it might be a little much in a few months time.

...and I replaced the leather band with a pugaree. About to do the same with a used Cattleman (unlined as standard), vis ebay. I do have a Campdraft; it's a hefty felt that keeps heat in (even in Silverbelly). Lack of vents would make a big difference even with the liner removed, though if you...

...since they come up on Mercari from time to time. As for new, I find I much prefer ribbon rather than leather hat bands, I might pick up a campdraft as a summer hat and just remove the liner. The lighter colour should help by reflecting some heat and it’s not as though I plan on spending all...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Pretty decent storm last night. Pecan debris off the neighbors trees all over my roof and yard. Rains all gone but its all heavy clouds, wet ground, decent breeze and kind of chilly. Sporting a Cedar Brown Campdraft Deluxe for the mornings dog duties

What Fed IV comes in "sorrel tan"? Do you mean "tawny fawn"? I wore a tawny fawn Fed IV for a few years in SE Asia. It worked well. I don't recommend the heritage felt for hotter months - I find the Fed IV heritage felt to be too dense no matter what the color. But the tawny fawn only comes in...

...way I’m considering something a little lighter for summer. I was considering a sorrel tan Fed IV and removing the lining, or possibly a campdraft in sand for the slightly wider brim. I’m not really into straw, and I’m the last few months I’ve gone off leather hatbands so although I was...

Yes, I noticed that as well. I think the 2nd hand market is the way to go with Akubras. With patience it is possible to find an Akubra (e.g., Snowy River, Bushman, Campdraft) in excellent condition in my size that is cheaper (and much better on the river) than a new Stetson wool hat for example.

    Akubra Overload

2 hats Im always watching out for are a silverbelly Campdraft Deluxe and a silver/ grey Bogart. I had a silver Bogart in my hands once ( so I know they once made them) but it was a 55 ( I wear 59 in Akubras). Have seen a few light colored Campdrafts, but so far they are either too small a...

That’s what I was thinking. The Fed IV is a great winter hat, but I don’t see myself wearing it through the summer except in terms of its shading capacity. I’m still considering another akubra for a general fieldwork hat, but as a ‘knockabout’ a fairly unprepossessing lightweight fedora is...

Most the older Stetson Whippet-ish like hats that Ive handled have been modestly lightweight felt..... much easier for year round wear compared to a heavier felt of a Campdraft or FedIV ( athough I do love both of those)

Bluegrass Green Campdraft, paired with an Outerknown "Blanket Shirt", Levis 502's and Birkenstock "Birmingham" boots. The wife is on the Oregon Coast for the King Tides, the kid is hiding out in his room like he does when he’s home from school on vacation, and I’m enjoying some quiet time to...

    Buying advice for beginner

...Akubra is a good place to start a hat journey (it's where many of us here started). One of the easiest hats to wear from Akubra is a Campdraft. It comes open crown and holds up to hard wear. Search TFL for campdrafts and you will find tons of info and pics. Here is a David Morgan listing...

...but that are lower crowns. At this point if I ever find a CLEAN silverbelly at the right pricepoint Ill jump regardless of which felt. Campdraft is just such a comfortable, versatile hat. Over the past year Ive seen a few but they were either way to small or looked like a previous owner used...

Mine is the standard imperial quality felt, but it has aged well. You’ll stumble upon one somewhere. Best of luck in your search!
