Braces, for some reason, do a bad number on my back and shoulders. I've given them millions of chances over the years, and start out fine, but end up feeling worse than I do with belts by the time the day is over.
Thanks for the replies; just an update -- I went to two doctors, neither of whom believed anything was wrong internally, and both of whom agreed that the problem started from a pinch-point from a combination of the trouser waist/suspender button/belt in the wrong place. It's been getting better...
Gentlemen -
There have been a few times in the course of my daily suit-wearing when I've experienced a bit of lower-back pain, generally directly at the point where the belt cinches on high-waist trousers. Last week, however, I noticed a pinpoint, coming-and-going pain on my side, again...
Couldn't agree more. Although there's something nice about the steel cabinets of microfilm, and up until the News left West 33rd St., the clip files. Drawers of paper envelopes with actual clippings (not just from the News, but all the other local papers, alphabetized by subject name, with wax...
In my countless hours covering news at Manhattan Criminal Court, my mornings often consisted of comments from the people waiting to go inside, as I waited to photograph my perp du jour. I would often get "that's a REAL hat." And, both on one day, I was complimented on my "1920s" and "1960s"...
Quite a mix here. On my father's side, the Hermanns (with variants on double/single consonants over the years) are from Wurttemberg; there are Brookleys/Brockleys from Hesse-Darmstadt; Weckerleys from Switzerland; the Wills from Scotland; Stelles from Ireland; Hopkins & Thompsons, presumably...
When I sat at the photo assignment desk at the Daily News, few things would irritate me as much as an incomplete or missing caption on an incoming photograph. Not only did it make it harder to deal with for its immediate purpose, but it potentially jeopardized the picture's long-term value as an...
Jeez, reviving an ooooold thread here...
But, yes, it was certainly done. It wasn't just an affectation, either -- in New York, it was even stipulated that that's where it belonged (alternately on the outermost garment) in the official memos of the NYPD. (Today, the wording on the cards...
Perhaps this is a thread that deserves to be split off...the most ridiculous, far-off, generic, commercial, generalizations that we hear when we take care in our appearance. As a photojournalist, I find it harder and harder to smile politely when I get "hey, Jimmy Olsen/Clark Kent/Peter...
I was worried that they were going to stop me at the door when I walked out with my own stuff. (Un)fortunately, everything seems to be barcoded...a lot of the principals' suits are done by Martin Greenfield, the legendary Brooklyn tailor, while most of the extras' stuff is rented from Daybreak...
Greetings!
Spent a wonderful day on the set of season 2 of "Boardwalk Empire" yesterday. Showed up at the wardrobe fitting in my Magnoli "New Yorker," and the costume person asked the boss "do we even need to dress him??" Of course, I was happy for the chance to try out MORE suits, and I...
Sarah and I broke out one of my Speed Graphics and burned through a few sheets of 4X5 film the other weekend, emulating commercial portraits of the common, non-celeb person.
I love my job so very much...
This week, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, a ceremony was held in NYC opposite Lincoln Center. Many of the characters were present, and I was honored and thrilled to receive comments from humans and Muppets alike. Grover was kind...
Gee, Other Hermann, who's got time to lounge when there's so much work to do??
P.S. -- Took your advice on the costume shop! Stocked up on obsolete NYPD unit collar brass!
Pardon the shameless self-promotion, but the New York Observer just did a profile about me and didn't overlook the vintage!
