    What are you listening to?

Right now, it's the Everly Brothers. Yeah. Don't laugh. Okay, you're totally laughing. Sigh. New, but off-beat: Red Stick Ramblers: Cajun/swing/jazz/etc. These dudes are brilliant. The Devil Makes Three: Um . . . jug-band revival? Kind of? Hot Club of Cowtown: Like they've...

    Long haired 1930s 1920 looks?

A lot of women didn't cut their hair. What I've seen of long hairstyles seems to be a lot of flat-against-the-head, parted down the middle, and with a bun in the back. A small number of images here. I kind of like second row, second column (with the peplos dress and big teardrop earrings)...

    So, do you wear Sunscreen?

My regular facial moisturizer is SPF 15, and since I work indoors all the time, sun isn't that big an issue. I wear sunscreen and a big hat if I'm going to be out that much, though. I hate sunburn.

    Extremely Oily Skin

I have ridiculously oily, temperamental, skin . . . and I live in a humid climate. I don't normally wear makeup because it makes me feel like my face has been battered (like, with flour) and deep-fried, and it always curdles after an hour or so. It's gotten better, though, since I swore off...

    Show us your vintage patterns!

OMG--I LOVE Hollywood 700! I've never seen that one. Dress projects here. My patterns, wish-list, and inspirational favorite images here.

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Heh. I used to do open-mic nights with a (sadly now-defunct) old-time music club. Lots of little old ladies in the audience. They LOVED my dresses. One had made the same dress when she was in high school, 60 years earlier, and she was very excited to see it resurrected. Younger people...

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

Oh, awesome! Is there any sort of [semi-]organized vintage sewing community in Houston, that I just can't find? You would think we'd be a big enough city to support one . . .

    Cute Vintage-y Shoes

Got these last fall at Kohl's, on sale. I wish the heels were lower--they'd be better at maybe 1" or 1 1/2"--but they're not bad.

    Show us what you've made!

Marian Martin 9359 Marian Martin 9359 (no date, probably circa 1946). I've made two versions: The first one was out of a navy blue print but I found that I needed to alter the front yoke pattern piece, as it was much too long along the inside [neck-side] edge. Once I did that, it fit...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

I don't think I've ever gotten a negative reaction. I didn't dress this way in high school or college (I was in school during the Grunge Era. I didn't listen to grunge but I loved flannel--mine were my dad's vintage wool Pendletons--shirts and baggy jeans, so it was a good cover), and I'm...

    Handsome Fellas!

Late to the party, as usual, but I have to put in a[nother?] vote for Gary Cooper: And Fredric March (Inherit the Wind, The Best Years of Our Lives) was quite a knockout when he was younger (this is from Les Miserables, 1930):

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

I'm Alethea (Ah-LEH-thee-ah, not that it matters online) from the Houston, Texas, vicinity. Thirty-three years old, single, no kids, office assistant, etc. I'm too hard on clothes to wear things that are actually vintage, mostly, but I sew things using old patterns. I got into that for a...

Is dressing vintage a purely modern day phenomenon?

I have a friend who is my mother's age, more or less (60 ish), who says that she and her friends used to look for deadstock clothing when they were young. That would have been in the mid- to late-1960's, and the clothing they wanted seems to have been mostly 1940's. It wouldn't have been very...
