    'Whipped' by Our Wives?

We have a similar arrangement. When a new motorcycle appears in the shed, or six boxes containing bicycle parts arrive in one week, I'm happy that he's happy. Ditto him when I come home from the bookstore with a dozen new books to add to my already towering stack. My boyfriend gets constant...

So, what shows are you addicted to?

House M.D. -- Just recently discovered reruns on cable and am now devouring the entire series on DVD. LOST and The Tudors...ditto on the DVD. We got into the DVD habit with The Sopranos; we don't want to pay for premium cable and are willing to wait a year and watch the entire season with...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Merthiolate!! Aaagh! *yucky* We had nightmares about this stuff. My dad insisted on putting it on any wound that bled. We saw commercials for Bactine and some of our friends' parents got it and it sounded so wonderful...we BEGGED for it, but to this day my dad insists if an antiseptic doesn't...

    "The Women"

It's not getting a kind reception from the critics who've weighed in so far: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10009516-women/ The movie came up in conversation among some friends last night, and none of them had seen the original. I invited them all over for a screening!

    "The Women"

To me, what makes The Women sacred is the dialogue...whip-smart, whip-fast, from poignant to scathingly hilarious to just plain scathing. I can't imagine that level of screenwriting coming out of today's Hollywood...and the trailer doesn't make me optimistic. Looks like yet another...

    What Are You Reading

A Suitable Boy, by Vikram Seth. 300 pages in, just over 1/5 done. Unlike when I read War and Peace, I'm having no trouble keeping the dozens of characters straight. Not sure how the author manages that, but it's brilliant. Even better, there's not been a single uninteresting page so far...

What was the last TV show you watched?

Ooh, I want to do this! If I can only talk my sweetie into it... We're halfway through the first season of The Tudors. Jonathan Rhys Meyers not being a redhead is no big deal, but as far as sparing "no man in his anger and no woman in his lust" ...meh. They've got the lust part down, but when...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I had the same reaction to Holiday. It didn't help that the first time around, I saw it on the heels of The Philadelphia Story. It's good, but it does suffer a bit in comparison. I watched it again a few months later, and enjoyed it much more. For a dopier, flakier Hepburn, what about...

    What Are You Reading

Darhling, I liked American Gods very much--I enjoy his writing for the same reasons you do. He just sort of gets on with it. AmateisGal, the Wave Me Goodbye book sounds wonderful. I'll have to check our library and see if it's on the shelves. I can't remember if I mentioned this one...

    What Are You Reading

The Gentle Infantryman, by Bill Boyd. A novel, but written by a WWII combat veteran. For the first time, I have an inkling of what it might have been like on the front lines. An amazing and heartbreaking book.

WOW! I quit my job today to go to Cosmetology school

Congratulations, perfectredlips! It's scary to make the leap from a secure job to follow your passion--I did it 11 years ago, and I've never regretted it for a second. Kudos to you, and best of luck! :eusa_clap

    We're Back From The BRINK!

New Look?! Uh-uh! I want shoulder pads and tailored! And besides, I just figured out how to do reverse victory rolls--please don't make me cut my hair and start over! Glad to see we're all back. I was starting to wonder if it was all a hallucination fueled by too much book research and...

    What Are You Reading

This is one of my all-time favorites. The essay on Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses is one of the funniest things I've ever read (and Lord knows I try to heed it with my own writing). Recently finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I liked it, but not as much as Good Omens. I'm currently...

    Women over 50? 40?

What a great thread! I agree, the older one gets the lighter the hair. But yeah, it needs to match skin tone. My mom's natural color was a gorgeous dark auburn. As she aged, her colorist turned her blonde. I never thought it looked right with her skin. I think she would've been striking if...
