    Show Us Your OVERCOATS

Hi all, I have been away from here for a year or two but have not been away from ebay or charity shops! I received today a fantastic Crombie wool overcoat bought on ebay for £19. It was made in 1957 for the sellers father-in-law (the names in the coat and that of the seller confirm) and is in...

Honey, have you seen my old favorite tweed sport jacket?

I can see some of my jackets ending up that way if I buy any more!!!!

    Show off the sports coats.

This is more of a blazer than sports coat so hope it is alright here. It is dated 1963 and the brass buttons have the makers name, Pitts & Co stamped on the back. The Leed's tailors is no longer in existence although there is a Whitelock pub in the same location as the old tailors premises.

This suit was made in 1992, relatively modern when compared against most other suits here. It was made by Carl Stuart of Huddersfield, the centre of the once huge but now tiny wool fabric industry, for a man who worked in one of the remaining mills as a sample. It is largely machine made, I...

1958 bespoke overcoat. I saw this in a charity shop in the north of England and nearly walked out without it, so glad I didn't! It was made by a London tailor for a ship owner who wanted something extra warm. I've worn it and it is very wind resistant. I've had to do a fair amount of...

Thanks for all the info and I hope you enjoyed seeing them, it is amazing how many different features come to light all the time. I have a couple of buttons to replace on the Jackson suit but they are are quite dished and I think are going to be difficult to match. I'll put some more suits...

    Show us your British suits

Here are a couple of British suits that I have acquired over the last year, also a very strange horn button. The first is 1963 probably bespoke by a tailor in Bristol. The second picture shows a very large pocket, normally seen in tweed jackets and known as a poachers pocket so strange to...

    1958 Overcoat

I recently picked up this 1958 overcoat, it is bespoke made and the upper section is canvas lined. I know this as there were numerous rips and tears that needed some temporary attention before a tailor does a proper job. The sleeve buttons are operable and even the buttonhole has a thread...

Hi, I know this is off topic but I really would like to put photos with my posts but under my posting permissions it says 'You may not post attachments' How does one obtain permission to post attachments, I have asked on other threads but haven't had an answer. I see it is possible to...

Thanks HBK and I think that your suit is great. I've been buying older suits for about a year now having experienced two new suits bought from M & S but made in China. I found a couple of 1980's suits made for a fabric buyer in Yorkshire, they fitted perfectly so the M & S rags went to the...

The single button is an interesting feature. I have a three piece suit by Jackson the Tailor (bought out by Burtons later). It is single breasted with a fairly narrow lapel and the single button with link. The lining inside has a quilted effect and the waistcoat is double breasted. It is...

Reviving a suit - is it worth it

Thanks both, I think a new lining is a great idea and luckily there are no odours in the suit. I'll have a go at spot cleaning and see if that works first.

Reviving a suit - is it worth it

Hi, I recently bought a Thresher and Glenny fully bespoke 3 piece morning suit made in 1973. It has been well used although I don't mind that, it is part of the history of the suit, most of the damage is on the inside. I'm wondering how far to go in trying to restore it. I but for to wear...

Hi, I recently bought, from a charity (thrift) shop a heavy wool overcoat. It is bespoke with working cuff buttons, canvassed lining and was made in 1958 by London tailor. The lining was in poor shape and needed repair, the outer is a heavy dark blue or black wool with herringbone pattern...

    Suits going up

I've noticed over the last couple of weeks (in the UK) a sudden surge of sellers on ebay selling what they claim are suits, anywhere from 30's to 60's that are clearly not and prices have been rising steadily too. Today I saw a tweed suit that the buyer was claiming to be 60's or possibly...

I like the link, interestingly a quick check on Ebay shows how inaccurate dating of suits can be!
