MarieAnne, it looks like you share features in common with your grandmother and - in particular from that angle - her smile!
My paternal grandmother, who my aunt thinks I greatly resemble, particularly when we were adolescents (don't have a scanned photo from then):
But there's also more than...
But you have 26 posts! You're averaging nearly three a year ;)
No, seriously... I drift in and out, but it's always a pleasure to either lurk or to post. Love to see active posters, but it's nice to know there are lurkers enjoying the conversation as well.
Aside from some lovely friendships and interesting conversations...the courage and skill set to try wearing vintage hosiery. Without that long running thread in the Powder Room, and the patience and stream of practical advice from the ladies who participated in it, I don't think I'd have tried...
Bought this lovely one from Salon of the Dames recently - just waiting on getting my mannequin heads back from the restorer to photograph it. You could possibly use a beaded/sequinned applique on the brow like here - there are also faux gemstones attached around it, and the face is framed by...
Rather than a narrow bandeau, a wider one is also a possibility, and may be more comfortable/suit your facial shape or styling more, as worn by Lily Damita here:
George Barbier's La Roseraie
If you want to be a real purist, the elaborate headdresses and bandeaux with Aigrettes tended to be more a holdover from the Orientalism of the teens (influenced by the Ballets Russes and Poiret), whereas the neat, close fitting sequinned evening cloches etc are...
Having problems with my outdated browser here so can't upload many images from my collection - but here's a possibility for the feather from a pinterest image:
I'm afraid I won't be much help with sewing techniques as I don't have much hands-on experience (and the person who restores my 1920s evening dresses and who has a lot of experience with them doesn't use the internet, unfortunately!). I could possibly help you with examples of beaded dresses if...
Lovely early 1920s beaded dress I bought recently (and a rather grim expression on my part, I'm afraid!). The beaded motif on this has quite subtle colour shadings, and is lovely and sinuous.
Agreed on that costuming element in the Miss Fisher Mysteries series - I get the statement that the costumer is making (look at how very modern and bohemian this woman is! She wears trousers!), but I think it is rather exagerated from a fashion history point of view, for the very reasons given...
Great letter, Big Man. We're working on a few WW1 projects at the museum where I work, basing as much as we can on objects in the collection that haven't had as much exposure as others. I handle our photographic licensing, and have been organising the use of images for large and small...
I refer to all my colleagues by their first names, as does everyone in the institution for which I work. The former Director had excellent lines of communication with everyone - one of the people she was very friendly with was our receptionist, who acted as a conduit of information (she was...
No worries! The Miss Fisher series tends to adapt styles for theatrical purposes which confuses things a bit. I love the capelines, too - have just bought a gorgeous one with ombre shaded ribbons and lavender lace...will post photos of it later :)
