WWII days at Midway Village this weekend

I went through registration earlier this evening. They said 1200 re-enactors pre-registered for this year's event.

    Vintage French Foreign Legion Boots

They sure do. I bought a pair of size 12s a few years back, and the soles cracked almost immediately. I had them resoled and am quite happy with them, but you do need to inspect the leather and the soles carefully if you are buying NOS FFL boots.

Do You Know Any Living WWII Veterans?

I know several in our area. One, a retired barber whom I met recently, still cuts hair at his home for the other vets he knows. He's 92, and is one of the soldiers in the background of the photo of General Patton peeing in the Rhine River.

    Aloofness in Re-enactment.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the reenacting unit you approached. Unfortunately, on this side of the pond, things can sometimes be very similar. I've never understood why a newbie would be treated that way either. To me, enthusiastic new people are how we get enthusiastic...

Women in WWII waiting on their Soldiers

I have a friend whose mother fell in love with an Army Sergeant just prior to the beginning of WW2. They were married, and only had a few months together before he was sent to the Philippines. After the attack on Pearl, the attack began at Bataan, where the husband was located. He was killed...

    War movie editing errors

Two examples I can think of - in The Patriot, the British cavalry (can't think of that particular unit's name offhand) wears red jackets trimmed in green. I saw an interview with Gibson where he mentions that the actual unit wore an all - green tunic, but they changed it for the film, thinking...

    Hand-Crank Coffee Grinders

[/IMG] This is our vintage Arcade Crystal coffee grinder. It's the same model my great grandmother used around the WW1 era. I was surprised that you can actually adjust the grind with it - the nut holding the arm on it will tighten or loosen, and bring the grinding wheels closer together or...

Where do you hang your hat?

    :eusa_clapSounds like our City council!

Where do you hang your hat?

At Veterans Memorial Hall in Rockford, IL, the seats in the auditorium have wire clips underneath them not only to hold hats, but gloves as well. The building was dedicated by Teddy Roosevelt in 1903. I wish I had photos of the clips; they are very ornate.

Speaking of "Mistress": Why Older Women Are Better

My Dad always used to joke that married men don't live longer, it just seems that way! :D My wife is 5 years older than me, and I would kid her that I was just following Ben Franklin's advice. For my part, I did get the better part of the deal...

    What are you wearing today??

Looking good! Midway's a lot of fun - our unit's really looking forward to it.

WWII US War Correspondent Collection / Impression

You have an excellent impression. I've never seen as complete a warco impression at the events I've been to. Well done!:eusa_clap

A breakdown of Fedora Loungers by sex, location, age and marital status

Male, 53 (ow, that looks even worse than it sounds!), happily married (30 years next May) in Northern Illinois. Two wonderful daughters 23 & 26, who also love vintage things and WW2 history.

    Old toasters

[/IMG] This is my great grandmother's Universal toaster. When you flip the doors down, it flips the toast to the other side as you put the door back up. [/IMG]

    Palladium Boots?

The Israeli Army wears them. http://www.palladiumboots.com/cgi-bin/palladium/store/product_detail.html?pid=02352:261# I have a pair, and they are quite comfortable in hot weather. Not sure how they compare in quality to the others posted here.

    Show us your Guns!

Hah! Well, maybe it doesn't bother me THAT much...;). One thing about that long barrel though, it is very accurate at 100 yards, something the originals probably weren't. I do have the vertical foregrip and drum magazine, just hadn't put them on for the photo. That REALLY makes the barrel look...

    Show us your Guns!

I bought it about 6 years ago for $1,000. I think new they are around $1,300 - $1,500 from Auto Ordnance, depending upon the options you go with.

Vintage televisions, anyone? Post pics here!

[/IMG] This is my 1947 RCA; my uncle was fond of vintage TVs, and gave it to me recently. I haven't taken it to have it checked out by a professional yet, but would like to at some point. Next to it is my 1933 Philco "Baby Grand" cathedral radio. It has been fully restored and is a real joy to...
