Calling Cards (name cards, not phone cards)

That's a good answer Joan! The people I usually give a card to are usually other 'vintage' people so they get it (I think). I did have to be sure to stress to the printer that the first two letters are meant to be in caps so they wouldn't think it was a typo. I like how it looks.

    Another outfit challenge!

Gaa! Nothing like short notice. You could do something like the Derby poster girl's hat; it's a b&w polka dot dress with straw hat trimmed with black and red flowers. That style of hat would probably be easy to find in modern sizes. I am guessing most women will be wearing a hat. If it is really...

But a stylish sociopath, I’m sure.

what makes a dress an evening dress?

Yes, by the writer for Vogue, Marjorie Hillis. It was the follow up to her best seller of 1936, Live Alone and Like It. I think she has a cute writing style. Another book in the series is 1938's Corned Beef and Caviar which covers entertaining. My copy of that one is inscribed "For my BELOVED...

Calling Cards (name cards, not phone cards)

I had searched for some classic styled visiting cards for a long time but had a hard time finding what I wanted. Searching under “name cards” I came across a lot of sites for “mommy cards” (!) such as these from Retro Baby (http://www.myretrobaby.com/item/lil--cowboy-calling-cards/794/c46) –...

what makes a dress an evening dress?

I think you are right, Sunny, that there were a lot of color options for evening gowns in the 30s-40s. I gather also though that many women wore a lot of black in the Depression years because they had to for economy. A 1937 book that I have written for women who were trying to live elegantly on...

    Scarlett O' Hara's Lipstick

That is very interesting MK. I got the information about fluorescent lighting from The Art of Gone With the Wind book. It is referring to the lighting for the makeup department, not the shooting lights, and says that Selznick employee Ray Klume installed “the new fluorescent lighting required...

    Scarlett O' Hara's Lipstick

Colorized later? No… both of these films were actually filmed in color in 1939 using a new technology, Technicolor. New screen makeup had to be developed, since what they had been using for black and white filmed badly under Technicolor – that is when Max Factor came up with his Pan-Cake...

The MK Falcon: The Time Has Come

I think my falcon quest has ended - I'm delighted; thank you again, MK. The wrapping was a nice touch. Here side-by-side is the MK dingus, with a non-MK dingus (probably Haunted Studios). MK's is the shinier one, closest to the books. You can really appreciate the attention to detail and how...

    Dishpan Hands....

My co-worker gave me a pair of these pink gloves last Christmas, because she’d heard that even glamour girls sometimes have to do disagreeable things, like dishes (unfortunately true). I was looking on-line to find a pair for my cousin, and found them here...

    vintage raincoats

I don't know about all transparent raincoats, but a U.S. newspaper reported that Wallis Simpson was seen wearing a "glass" coat; Wallis later wrote to her aunt about what a silly story it was, and that the coat was, in fact, made of cellophane. This was c. 1935.

I like suspense. I have a drop cloth ready on the rug, in case there is any bleeding.

The Things Women Will Do...for Beauty

I haven't seen one of these on eBay. The Reduc-O-Matic. Despite the name, it is touted as more for stress-relief than weigh loss, although it does note you can drop 'two or three pounds' while you're at it. Also recommended for “harried husbands.” From Harper’s Bazaar, November 1941...

    Ann Miller

yowzers alert **bump** TCM is showing Ann in "Eve Knew Her Apples" again Saturday April 12 @ 3am PT. I was sorry I didn't record it last time. Followed by Ann in the rare wartime comedy/musical "Reveille with Beverly," a picture that - or at least one of Ann's scanty costumes in it-...

    Bette Davis 100 Years Old

And coincidentally, my copy of the Bette Davis Collection Vol III came in the mail today! The San Francisco Chronicle had a nice feature on her the other day too (but the author says her Now, Voyager wardrobe was by Edith Head - Davis fans know it was Orry-Kelly)...

    Nothing but Seamed Stockings

I've seen those, but never in my size. I think they're neat. I owned some vintage black fishnets that were definately postwar (probably 50s) that had the large weave like we see today, but whatever they were made of, were extremely heavy - I think I could actually have gone down to the river and...

    Nothing but Seamed Stockings

Samantha, I have seen fishnet stockings featured on “respectable” women in my collection of 1939-1942 Vogues and Harper’s Bazaars. I don’t recall seeing black, but certainly neutral or nude tones and I have seen refernces in text to colored ones. They call them mesh or net stockings. I’ll scan a...

    Bathroom Renovations - 1940 Style

Here are some examples from Better Homes & Gardens May, 1948. From what I've studied, I'm not sure they are all that different from what a 1945-46 house would have had, at least not in the US. Tom is easily pleased... he just wants his Plate Glass shower stall... and a highball...

Show us your Vintage Beauty Products!

Sorry - some of these are kind of blurry. Vintage leg make up (the smaller one is in the shade "victory tan"), talc, and Air Float powder - soothes "prickly heat" Nestle Curling lotion from the early 40s: Vanity Fair beauty soap and "My Own" (not to be confused with His'ns) tiny...
