A co-worker told me the other day that her teenage son wants a hat like mine; he thinks it's cool. But then she added something like "I never thought a teenager would think a hat like that was cool." :eusa_doh:
This film is a favorite of mine, and it's a spot-on parody of the noir genre. Your classic noir hero (or anti-hero) is a guy who gets pulled into the plot against his will, and is probably being used by someone else to further their own ends. He's the type who claims not to stick his neck out...
The Dallas is a great hat. A female friend of mine has one; it's a "fifteen" grade. Very nice felt, soft and supple. We were in a vintage clothing/antique store and I had her trying on all the hats that were too small for me. (She's a 7-7 1/8, whereas I'm a 7 1/2.) There were several that I...
Also, check out Asleep at the Wheel for a modern take on Western Swing. They've been around quite a while with some modest commercial success as basically a Bob Wills tribute band.
Edit: I see I was composing my replay at the same time you were posting yours, JohnnyGringo. Great minds and all...

It wasn't listed very well, the photo didn't show very much, and the seller had zero feedback. But, it's Cavanagh, allegedly size 7 1/2 (I've learned the hard way to be skeptical of claimed hat sizes on eBay), and the opening...
I was playing with this very idea recently while watching Cassandra's Dream. I kept imagining this as a late '60s-early '70s film starring Michael Caine in the Ewan McGregor role. I was having a harder time with the part played by Colin Farrell. Sean Connery maybe?
I like it. Hats with tall crowns and wide brims are pretty commonplace, as are hats with lower crowns and narrower brims, but that '30s combination of tall, straight crown and relatively narrow brim isn't seen that often anymore. I think it's a great look.
I remember reading a similar story about Sid Vicious. Someone gave him a brand new leather jacket and he threw it on the ground, stomped on it, etc., saying he didn't want anything "beautiful or new." Of course, that was a big part of the punk ethos, I guess.
Great story! I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Stan, I've had the same problem with motorcycle parts. In my case, not only was it the wrong part but it was also for the wrong bike. Luckily, it was a small and inexpensive part and the seller told me not to bother sending it back (wasn't...
From the linked news story: "When Taylor, who loves and collects hats, reached the front of the line, he looked up at Depp and said, "Hi, nice to meet you. I like your hat, can I have it?""
I don't think anyone is criticizing Mr. Depp.
Well, I think I've got to side with Woodsie on this one. Asking for an autograph is one thing, asking for a piece of personal property that has actual intrinsic value to the owner (in this case Mr. Depp) is something else. To reference Mr. Fawcett's example, this would be like asking Arnold...
I was watching that one too, and would have put a bid on it if it had stayed really low (it was still at less than $10 with a few hours to go), just to pass it along to someone here it might fit. Looks like it will probably be a pretty nice hat, but I'd be a little surprised if it does indeed...
There are a lot of "cheap" (price-wise) vintage fedoras on eBay if you can wear a 7 1/4 or smaller. For the price of a new, cheap wool felt hat you can get a barely worn vintage fur felt hat that will likely surpass the quality of new fur felt hats costing 10 times as much. As long as you don't...
I will be sure to do that.
Also, I don't want this to come off as a knock on either Akubra or Everything Australian. As NonEntity said, it's good to see that Akubra is taking quality control seriously, and while I do think Everything Australian can improve its communication a bit, I would...
