Vintage Things That Will NOT Disappear In Your Lifetime

A few years ago there was a thread about public clocks...the kind you'd see on the corner of a building or on a pedestal in a public square or market. They used to be everywhere. I enjoyed that. At any rate, I can't stand to read time digitally. I refuse to wear a digital watch, because...

    BATTER UP!

Very rarely does a pitcher get out every hitter. But the good ones get the outs when they need them most. Eovaldi got the outs when he needed them. Spring Training starts in about 3 months.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

My wife once sprung this "stripper name" business on me. Told me her stripper name is "Misty McKnight". There are times I wish I'd married Misty McKnight.

    Summertime then and now ...

I think our local schools start the first week of August. We never started before first of September. Of course, they get out earlier in the spring than we used to, and they get a lot more days off during the school year. "Summer" ain't what it used to be.

Anyone else hating the hot weather

We had a little cool snap this week and the overnight low temperatures plunged down into the 80s. The world has gone soft, I tell ya.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

As an over 50 vinyl enthusiast, referring to records as “vinyls” makes my skin crawl as well. But I’m somewhat comforted that the kids are actually interested in vinyl records. It’s renewed popularity has dramatically increased the availability of both records and gear, though it’s driven up...

“A pipe gives a wise man time to think and a fool something to stick in his mouth” - I’m sure said by someone.

    REM sleep - dreams

I have had several recurring dreams for many years. One is the old having an exam at school and not only being unprepared, but forgetting where to go to even take the exam because I didn't attend class all semester. I also have recurring dreams about finding hidden rooms in my house or attic...

    BATTER UP!

I am the last person to suggest that there is too much baseball, but I love how the pitch clock has moved games along. And with my team in AL West, and having to suffer through far too many games starting at the ungodly hour of 9:00 in the middle of the night, I appreciate games ending on the...

I get those solicitations in the mail too. I enjoy a good steak as much as the next guy, but yeah, if it means sitting through that nonsense, I'd rather eat dirt. I haven't "pre-planned" my final preparations either, and frankly neither me or my wife care much about how it gets done. My...

My reply to these is always "I give up...who?" And I've gotten to where most of the time if I don't know the number, I don't answer. Most calls are from retirement seminars and funeral homes nowadays. And since we know longer have phones at the office, I don't have to worry about that now.

My wife and I were both in our mid-30s when we married, and we both kept our names. She sometimes get called "Mrs. My last name" and I'm sometimes called "Mr. Her last name". We rarely correct anyone, unless there is compelling need to do so. On a side note...when we went to get our...

    Doing Dishes

I much prefer a larger single sink than a double one, if for no other reason that you can actually fit a large pot and the cutting board in the single basin variety. Nothing is more frustrating while doing the dishes than trying to wrangle something too large for the sink. Messy.

    Income Tax Time Again

One of the perks of marrying a CPA is not having to do my own taxes for the last 25 years. She does all the work. She goes over everything with me, I guess so I can't come back and deny knowledge should things go sideways, but my tax preparation is basically "sounds good to me". And one of...

I have worn corrective lenses since about age 15. I've tried contact lenses, but never cared for wearing them longer than a few hours, so I've stuck to glasses mostly. I try to make them fashionable as well as functional, though I have to admit I'm mildly ticked by folks who wear them strictly...

Lots of examples in the culinary world. Chocolate and tomatoes came from the Americas, yet are often associated with European cuisines. And nothing's more American than apple pie, yet apples are native to central Asia. It's a small world after all.
