    The Vintage Camera Club Thread

The "vintage look" is dependent on a number of things. What the camera will actually produce varies depending on the lens type and quality of the optics, among other things. The lens will (partially) determine the level of contrast and sharpness of the image. Variations on that will give a photo...

    Show us your lighters

That's actually a Rollalite rather than a Rollagas. If that bottom fill plug washer is missing it might leak; it would certainly evaporate more rapidly than normal. Overfilling can make them ooze fluid as well.

    Vintage Watch Repair

I have a fairly sizable collection myself, and I generally either use my local watchmaker, or I send them to a gentleman in Clinton, Maryland, named Fred White. He does excellent work and his rates are very, very reasonable. He has no Web site, but his business phone number is 301-868-7264. He...

    The Orient Express

Surely this isn't Amtrak's "City of New Orleans"? I've ridden that one. Worst service in the system.

Custom Tailor recommendations - made to measure

I second the recommendation for a local tailor. I have one with whom I'm quite satisfied. Prices will be higher than those Hong Kong outfits, but the level of quality and service is even higher. As usual, you get what you pay for.

I also like this one- good thing since I have another example of this. The only real problem is the center raised areas of the lugs tend to wear noticeably, if you're not careful.

    Lost worlds anj-4

I have one that I bought new about 7 years ago, and despite any accuracy issues, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I was wearing it just yesterday in -12 degree weather, and didn't really notice a thing. It does need to have the zip replaced, but I'm balking at the $275 repair fee. I stopped...

    Help with location in Chicago

North of the river, and west of Michigan. I'll have a look at Boni Vino. Any opinions on Maggiano's?

    Help with location in Chicago

No. that's definitely not it. What I remember was literally under one corner of a rather tall building. I'm thinking of browsing through google maps and check close-ups in street view. Maybe I can run across it that way.

    Help with location in Chicago

I'm hoping someone can lend a hand in identifying a small Italian restaurant I spotted in Chicago about three years ago. I know it was in the general area of, but not directly on, Michigan Ave,and was tucked into the corner of a lot, underneath what I think was a large department store building...

The Real, real Indy Jacket: Not What You Think

:(I've seen the film, after much trouble getting hold of a copy. It wasn't worth the effort. I'd place it somewhere below "Tales of the Gold Monkey" on a bad day, without the aircraft and gentle humor to liven it up.:(

Correct me if need be, but I think a Ranchero should have the large arrow hands. It looks like those have been replaced at some point.

Premature burial that causes you the most pain....

I watched that. Honestly, it was the single worst sci-fi I've ever seen ("Lost" is a close runner-up) More plot holes, logic errors, tactical and logistics errors than I could count. Just...bad.

Premature burial that causes you the most pain....

I was really irritated (though not surprised, given network TV mentality) when Alcatraz was canceled. A beautiful concept never given the chance to really develop properly.

Anyone have experience with US Authentic?

I second the statements by Asienizen - US Authentic does very good work, though I have a quibble or two with the details of their Indy jacket clone. Solid materials and excellent service. I've dealt directly with Shaul on a number of occasions, including a sample jacket for fitting and an A-2 as...

Golden Era Things You've Revived Or Repaired For Use

I wasn't insulting anyone's choices or reasoning; I put it that way because I see a great many people, presumably not from here, adopt some psuedo-trendy "vintage" thing, only to drop it a month later in favor of something else. Personally, I do everything you mentioned there, barring the...

Golden Era Things You've Revived Or Repaired For Use

Living or "reviving" any of these things as just a shadow of themselves, or as some sort of momentary curiousity (not that we do that here) would be rather pointless. If they were worth doing back when, then they're worth doing again, in the here and now. A worthwhile habit, a pleasant custom...

Golden Era Things You've Revived Or Repaired For Use

For my part, not only do I use the restored vintage phones, fountain pens, and typewriters, but I now carry visiting cards for social occasions, receptions, and whatever sort of appropriate function requires one. I have cards for myself, separate cards for my lovely partner in crime in the event...

    Alden's 40's Horsehide Aviator Jacket

This jacket is waaaaaay to small for me, based on those measurements, but the style really catches my eye. Any recommendations for something from, say, Aero, or others, that could duplicate that asymmetrical front and that collar?
