ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

I've actually lost count - well over a dozen I reckon with the oldest being from the 50's! Interesting to see how a size 2 in these can vary. This one is a bit too short in the arms and body (as well as generally being a bit tight!) when compared to some of my other Picks. Might give it a...

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

It arrived today :p swore I was done buying any more subs but couldn't resist!! Lovely 'furry' wool and interesting to note to the slight styling differences when compared to my other Picks from roughly the same period. This has the quite wide style neck funnel like the 70's example and is quite...

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

Yeah there's a lot of people join with their first jacket asking advice etc - been a few recently I think so that is a bit odd.

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

Cheers Steve - yes I also got a chance to dig out my subs so couldnt resist! That's one of the Picks - mid 60's one I think. Can't take a photo without getting a dog in the shot - we have 7!! A lot of tramping about in fields which is where the Irvin / submariner combination is very handy once...

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

Hi Stevo and welcome - that's a fabulous looking jacket you've got yourself there! Not easy to find in a large size either. I would chance my arm and say it looks like it could be a Wareings jacket by the belt loops and the collar hoops - very similar to mine as below. Possibly made around 1940...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

I've been wearing my subs a lot for daily wear during this cold snap, esepcially the J PIck one which feels really lambswooly and sung. Just been reading through the recent posts and @Grandfather's Hat you seem to be as obssessed as me - some great info in your posts! I've just obtained an...

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

I'm finding this to be a very useful combination in the latest cold snap - my early war Irvin teamed with a 1955 Royal Navy issued submarine jersey. Really warm for chilly walks with the dogs (and the odd moody selfie!!)

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

Thanks :) - I do work in comms actally! I was very, very lucky with the older subs - all my Christmasses sort of came at once! I got the 'new' Size 1 Pick off ebay, corresponded with the owner who is a lovely old bloke and ended up buying all his subs for a very reasonable price too! The newer...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

Generally contract numbers beginning SL were used from around 1989 to the mid 90's - and you're right Pick went out of business in 1991 I think :) SL31 ran from 1981 to 1990 but I've not managed to find anything for SL22 (all the SL's seem to be in the 30s but I'm far from an expert!!) . Before...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

There’s been some great posts about subs in the time it’s taken me to get my finger out and write this post – and sorry if this is a bit over long and indulgent! One thing I would say is that submariner jumpers has definitely become a bit of an obsession with me! I am now the proud owner of 6...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

You'll have to post some pics! I love my Pick sub which dates from '75 (and has certainly seen some active service!). It feels to be about double the weight of the modern issued RN jerseys (at least the one I have from 2013 which was made in China!) I've also got two issued submariner jerseys...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

Thanks - I was just curious as it wasn't until I began looking into buying my own sub (ending up with one from ONW) that I discovered how many labels come from the same manufacturer (for instance Silvermans subs come from the same manufacturer as OKW - TW Kemptons - so are the same sweater)...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

I really like the look of the Guideboat sub. I see they're made in England too - does anyone know if they produced under the Kempton / Outdoor Knitwear house? I haven't found a UK outlet yet and curious who would make them over here.

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

Andrew, just going back to Lord Flasheart's very nice IAC jacket, there's a small 'c' under the crown stamp of the DOT slider - what does that indicate? I've seen that on a DOT slider before somehwere... It also looks to be nickel rather than the more usual brass (I have dot zip in my spares...

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

Beamish is wonderful and luckily it's only a couple of miles from us. My wife works in the tea rooms at the moment so I'm getting to spend even more time there. It was truly baltic on Thursday night but with my newly aquired sub under my early war irvin I was toasty all night!

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

Thanks - there's certainly cold weather on the way and potential more snow here! I will probably give the sub and an Irvin a bit of an airing tongiht at the Beamish Christmas night I'm going to. Any excuse and it looks like it will be bloomin freezing!!

    White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters

I got the next size up from Outdoor Knitwear (well Niffi Nautical, which is the same brand Silvermans sent me) which is a 44" or Large. I'm very pleased with it, quality seems excellent and I think I needed that little bit of extra room (I felt a little 'corsetted' in the 40"- too many mice...

ALL ORIGINAL Irvin RAF type Jackets - Loving that Wolf in sheeps' clothing!

For me it started out of necessity with a the need to do the odd repair, resew a seam etc, replace a zip or pull. I can remember the panic after the first bit of damage when I split one of the side seams down by the belt - I think from the seat belt in the car. Then a few other bits and bobs -...
