    Shoe Care / Shoe Shine

I've been bitten by the bug, too. Went from 0 to 7 pairs of cowboy boots in the past 3 months. Not sure why. The subject of exotic leather care has come up a few times on Jennifer June's site, dimlights.com (currently down). Bick 4 is often prescribed for cleaning and Meltonian delicate cream...

    Loosened ties...

heresy I have to admit that I hate wearing ties, loose or tight, and avoid doing it unless I have to. I don't mind wearing purely nonfunctional clothes to suit convention, but I draw the line at wearing a noose snugged against my neck. That said, there's no point in doing something halfway...

    The Adventurer's Gear Thread

Where do you get a custom sheath made for a Kabar? I'm in need of LH sheaths for all of my knives. I like my Kabar but can't see actually carrying it. I carry a smaller knife for cutting tasks and would use a stone if I needed a makeshift hammer.

    Sword Canes...

For any lawyers out there... I've always assumed that "possess" means to possess in public, as opposed to owning and keeping at home. Do the California statues really mean that a martial artist can't keep a pair of nunchaku at home or at the dojo for practice? That's pretty draconian. In...

    Sword Canes...

I'm curious if they were ever anything but a novelty item. I can't think of a time period between the one where one could carry swords openly and the one where, if you were going to carry concealed, a firearm wasn't a more logical choice. Maybe the cane guns made more sense, but even that is...

How do you grade Stetson quality?

I am a hat preschooler, but one big difference I noticed between my Stetson cowboy hat and Akubra fedora is the softness of the felt. I'm not sure is this is just a western vs. fedora thing, but I sure prefer the Akubra. The material is very light and supple and sits better on my head. The...

    Favorite type of Steak

Porterhouse, rare. You get two steaks in one: a T-bone and a filet mignon. Filet by itself doesn't have enough body for me. A agree that shopping for steak in a supermarket is a waste of time. I'm fortunate to have access to some nice butchers in NYC.

    10.000 BC

Nothing can compare to "Quest for Fire." Genius. I'll definitely see it, though. My kind of film.

    Cold ears

What is an era-appropriate way to keep the ears warm while wearing a fedora? I'm not particularly fond of earmuffs. Anyone know if the headband that goes around the ears is too modern?

    Akubra Cattleman sz.60 for sale

OK, I'll take it. I tried to PM you, but I'm told I'm not allowed. Is this a forum wide thing, or do I need to do something special to get PM privileges? Please let me know how to get in touch to make arrangements. Kenji

    Fountain pens

I stand corrected on 3rd from top. On closer inspection, not a 51. I don't have any 61s. Do they also fill with the aero mechanism, or do they use that weird sponge mechanism I've read about but never seen? How are they as writers?

    Fountain pens

Those middle two are, as John points out, with hooded nibs. Probably Parker 51s, but possibly 21s. I don't think they made the 21s with gold filled caps. Can you easily unscrew the nib section to reveal a filling mechanism where you press on a bar covering the sac? Or is there a section that...

The three worst vices of 1950...

Alan, Thank you for that wonderful story! Too bad our little war hasn't sparked a similar sense of personal modesty here in the U.S.

    A cool, classic knife

I just received a Benchmade Griptilian in the mail. I'm quite impressed with it. It has a nice heft and opens very smoothly. It's also ambidextrous, which is important to a lefty like me. It will replace the lost Spyderco Endura that was my EDC. I have a couple of Opinels. I agree that they...

    New boots - opinions?

Coolness is in the eye of the beholder. I think they're cool, just not in a "Golden Age" way. f you like them, no reason not to enjoy them. BTW, I like to wrap my laces around the ankle a couple of times and then tie a square knot in the back. That way they don't snag on brush and come untied.

    New boots - opinions?

I have a pair of similar combat boots. They're comfortable, but I don't like the soles. Not enough grip. I like the White's and Hathorn packer boots. If I'm ever in Spokane, I'll get a pair custom made. For that price, I can't see buying off the shelf. Another nice looking boot is the Filson...

    The Filson Thread

My filsons I have both single and double cruisers and I can't say enough nice things about them. Even the single is warm enough for most Northeast winter weather. I have yet to feel cold (around the torso) in my double. They are nice for city wear, too. I get lots of complements, especially on...

    Help for picking fountain pens

first post I've been lurking for a few weeks, trying to learn about hats. Now that I've ordered my first fedora (an Akubra Squatter, shipped today!), I thought I'd better join in. I've been collecting fountain pens for awhile, and they were what originally drew me into the 30's, 40's style...
