I don't mind black hats, but I don't go out of my way looking for them either. I'm pale, so black tends to look bad on me anyway. I much prefer grey or brown as I look better in earth tones.
Plus where I live, black hats connote old school gangsters and the orthodox Jewish community. I'm...
I've gotten a few great suits, sportcoats and ties, but by and large what I find is complete crap. I too went overboard initially, only to raise my standards and start leaving marginal items on the rack. 99% of what I see is 1980s low gorge sack suits from JCPenny and the like, and three button...
^ Excellent haul. Your taste in ties is very similar to my own. Simple stripes, solids and classic patterns. I too tend to favor Brooks Brothers in my hunts.
I've only seen Stafford suits occasionally in my thrifting travels. Of those they are usually old, with low gorges, coarse fabric and wide lapels. The current crop in store is a much nicer cut.
Now that I've been wearing hats more regularly, I don't get feedback as often. With regards to the looking Jewish comments, that is a concern of mine. Which is why I have shied away from wearing dark colored wide brimmed hats, especially with a long coat of similar color. I'm tending more...
Sorry, not a fan. As much as I enjoy thrifting, you can't really sterilize used shoes IMO. Too much risk of catching someone else's crud. Same goes for hats. I buy my own.
Since I've been wearing more hats I've gotten compliments. Most people don't care or keep their opinions to themselves. At work I've been called everything from James Bond to Al Capone to Elwood Blues to Red Reddington. Hats aren't normal for the unwashed masses, so they conjure up an image...
Of interest to folks here.. JCPenney also still carries nice hats. They aren't full beaver/leather/lined monsters like people buy here, but they aren't the stingy brim crap sold at Kohls either. I have one of their St Johns Bay Panama hats, and a charcoal Stafford fedora. Been considering going...
Thanks all. It's good to be here so far. Lots of fun and many interesting characters. The suit and tie threads are inspiring.
I neglected to mention that I'm an electrical engineer if anyone cares about that sort of thing. I don't wear ties to work (if I did I would hate it). I enjoy dressing...
I have a black narrow brim Scala which I enjoy quite a bit. It was one of my earliest hat purchases. I avoid wider brimmed black fedoras as I do not wish to be mistaken for a man of certain religious affiliation, especially if I let my beard grow out.
Hello, I'm new to the forum but have been lurking for a while. I've been wearing brimmed hats since I was about 7. I tend to like old things- my many hobbies include reading, ogling classic cars, model kits, collecting old books, vinyl, ties, and now hats.
I absolutely loathe summer. Here in NJ we get both extremes, bad blizzards and terrible sumers. I'm pale Irish and burn very easily, the humidity gets to me, and I can't get anything done outside simply because I can't take it.
Fall is and always has been my favorite season. I don't like spring...
I like Stafford, I have a pair of their brown Logan wingtips which always earn me compliments. I don't have any of their dress shirts or suits, but I have several of their ties and like them quite a bit.
