    Boater faction!

Dear all, I am mostly a lurker here and have not posted much since I subscribed many years ago. Please forgive me if this message does not belong to this thread. I came across this vintage picture dating back to the 1890's and showing Ernest Chausson, Claude Debussy, Raymond Bonheur (the three...

    sterkowski caps

Hello, Just to revive this old thread and as I do not seem to find any other thread specifically on Sterkowski caps on the forum, I can tell about my experience with them. Received my first order yesterday. I bought a very utilitarian cap, the 'Patrol', which I wanted to go trekking. Very nice...

    The Cap Faction

Hello cap lovers, I have not come the lounge in a while but I juts purchased a very nice Lawrence and Foster flat cap at a bargain. It's the first cap of this style I have as I'm more of a hat and 8 pannel cap kind of guy. Then I have a question. There's a kind of plastic stiffener in the...

    French Hats and makers.

Nice ! While searching, I found this old article on Mossant in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France's collection: http://rapportgallica.bnf.fr/rapport.html?query=%28dc.identifier%20all%20%22bpt6k2471378%22%29%20and%20%28gallica%20all%20%22mossant%20chapeaux%22%29

    French Hats and makers.

I did try to find some information about this shop I never heard about...but nothing interesting turned out. One of theses days, when I have the time, I'll go and visit the archives of the registry of commerce to look for information on Sools and other hat shops which were prominent at the...

The height of the hat is just under 6". My understanding is that top hats gradually became lower at the turn of the century. Am I right?

    French Hats and makers.

Another contribution to this thread. Probably one of the hardest hats to wear nowadays in my collection as formal enough occasions are quite scarce. It was bought at "A l'Herissé" which was another famous hat shop in Paris at the time and belonged to my great grand-father. So it probably dates...

I too had this ring on my Federation IV I ordered from Hatsdirect. When I first unpacked the hat I thought it was due to the cardboard ring they use, like you johnnycanuck. But it seems unlikely. Steam helped a lot in making it lesse visible.

    French Hats and makers.

It says "SOOLS 5 Rue du Havre, 9Bd Poissonnière, 9 Maisons à Paris". I saw vintage ads (said to be from the 30's) for SOOLS which mention "12 Maisons à Paris" and also indicate another shop adress : Bd Haussmann. My understanding is that SOOLS closed its last shop in the 60's. So my hat - I...

The hat was unlined. The only element which might help is this Sools crown patch as I no longer have pictures of the original sweatband :

    French Hats and makers.

Hello, Here is for my first contribution to this thread (sorry for the low quality picture). This is a Fléchet which belonged to either my grandfather or my great grandfather. I consequently have a bit of trouble dating it. It was purchased from Sools, which was one of the big hat shops in...

Hi, Thank you very much for this response and piece of advice. And I'm glad it comes from someone who appreciates Frank Zappa. I'll definitely try the hair dryer method. I do not know what is the consensus over here, but I just tuck the linings of my hats under the sweatband. I never seemed...

    Akubra Overload

Hello, This is my first post - although I have been a long time reader - on this forum and I do hope I'm not violating any forum rule or recommendation by posting here. I also hope this is the appropriate thread for my question. I did a search on the forum and could not find a definitive...
