Yeah, you can pull them right out without too much consequence. Although the hat might fit a bit differently (probably looser) after you do so. If you really wanted too, I think you could probably just pull it out and unbend the wire, and then try putting it back in though.
It's obviously not a coincidence that the Fed 4 was made to conform to the more generally agreed Indy hat dimensions and block shape. Considering the Federation from the start was made for and with the assistance of COW folks, this change was more about offering a better product to the primary...
Probably 20th Century wars in general had something to do with this. It was only a century ago when people still wore uniforms that served little purpose other than formality. With war becoming less traditional, so did everything else involved with that. Pretty soon you have a bunch of men...
Haha, doh!!! I can't believe I did that. I guess I just wrote down what I literally saw and I just happened to be looking at the markings on the ruler in eighths and it didn't cross my mind that 1 6/8 is 1 3/4. It's all the same anyways. :p
Yeah, definitely lucky to have my head. Although that one's a 6 7/8 I am able to wear hats from 6 3/4 to 7 1/8, mostly because most hats don't actually properly fit my round oval head. I'm actually a size 7 round oval otherwise, but I've never had such a hat. I'm also just a good hunter, I've...
Yeah it's not actually that tapered, but it's no stovepipe. Also, there is also plenty of proof that some of the Raiders hats weren't perfectly stovepipe, but rather appeared that way because of numerous factors such as turning the hat, long oval head in regular oval hat, or hidden dents as a...
I've posted this hat in its own post a while back, but I figured I'd add it to this collection as well for reference.
Couple months ago, I got this more or less pristine dark brown Disney Twenty, size 6 7/8. Not only was it a Twenty, but it even has its own Cavanagh edge thing going with no...
I'm not absolutely sure, but if you e-mail hatsidirect, they may still have some old Federations sitting around, but they aren't being produced anymore.
The Federation IV and Federation IV Deluxe aren't that different from the original, but there are some changes. The most obvious is crown...
Actually, that's what I wrote, that dimensional brims weren't common, although I'm pretty sure some had to have existed somewhere. Amongst the ramblings on COW once, I've heard some people make a connection with Australian hats and dimensional cut brims. Out of all my hats I have, only my...
Actually the original Federation was 6", it's the newer one that is 5.5", which is now commonly considered the open crown height of the Indy hat (it was previously 6"). The more uncommon things about the Indy hat for the times are the raw edge and dimensional cut brim. The brim width, open crown...
Here's my new Federation IV after buying an old Federation 5 years ago.
Very pleased with it, although I can't say the felt quality has anything on my vintage hats.
Hmm, very interesting about the floating sweatband, it does make sense, since the sweatband's shrinkage would be given more freedom to deform away from the shape of the hat itself.
Seems more like a marketing ploy since most sweatbands will eventually shrink due to moisture and heat anyways. Some people have intentionally done this to make hats fit better. Consider it a slower version of the lampshade or hairdryer trick.
It is massive, but I disguised a lot of that with brim burl and the tight pinch. I very much like how it is now, but it wasn't as manageable straight off. 3 inches is a lot of brim and I generally like wide brims. The Disney isn't that less wider but you'd be surprised at how much an eighth of...
Recently got 3 new hats to add to the collection after setting my sights on getting some non-grays.
In my haul, I pulled in some really, extremely nice catches all for less than $30 each.
First up we have a medium brown Lee of unknown make and age, size 6 7/8. 2 1/4" underwelt brim, 5"...
