Which movies are and aren't film noir, as well as what film noir is, are questions that noirheads have been arguing probably since the dawn of the term (and plenty of books have been written on the subject). Those who coined the term named Laura and The Maltese Falcon as examples, yet in...
My pick for this would be Body Heat. It's a superior piece of art that to me is just how film noir would've been had it been made in the 80s.
As for The Long Goodbye I just could never buy Elliot Gould as Marlowe. Perhaps I should give the movie another go.
Edit: Phantom Lady is really good...
I've only gotten positive comments for holding doors for other people. Never once has someone told me I needn't do that. And I've dated a feminist. ;)
I remember being 13 and my English teacher asking me to accompany her to grab some equipment. When I opened the door and waited for her to...
I must admit I feel Paris has one quality about her, her voice. Just too bad she seems to have soaked not only her throat in whisky, but her brain as well.
Actually the novel didn't end this way. It ended at sea. They were both eaten by sharks if I remember correctly. The movie is quite a bit better than the novel.
The problem with a punch of course is you can't use it for a cigar that doesn't have a rather flat head, like a torpedo.
When unable to find one of my cutters I have on a couple of occasions resorted to using my teeth. It actually works pretty well. You just bite gently all around the head...
DI is my all time favorite movie, I love it to death. The ending is great as well, nearly perfect. One just has to cut the movie some slack for bullet wound placement.
Stanwyck is strangely attractive for sure, even in that over the top blonde wig.
For a more analytical approach to DI I...
I was pleasantly surprised when they announced Daniel Craig as the next Bond. As much as I like Brosnan, Craig was my second choice. Saw him in Layer Cake, a really good brit gangster flick. He was great. I'm sure he can pull it off.
Detour is a classic. I've watched it at least five times, absolutely great. Arsenic and Old Lace though I'm not that fond of. The humor just didn't sit all that well with me. But Lorre is always good.
I have since quit this job and am now working in the archive of a nuclear power plant. The job wont last more than six to twelve months though. The government recently forced the power plant to shut down because of a stupid political decision made 19 years ago.
I'm a total film noir nut, and from Sweden. The Killers is one of my favorite noirs. In it Burt Lancaster plays a man called 'The Swede'. And Harald of course if my first name.
Gotham City felt like a studio to me. As if they had taken parts of Chicago and disconnected them entirely from the rest of the city, so that the soul was lost.
I don't buy the idea (no pun intended) that the love of money is the reason we see crappy movies today. Why should the people in charge today love more money than those that were in charge before?
The numbers are bigger now. More is at stake. This might make people less willing to take risks...
