What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

I will have to trawl through my old mans stuff, he was a scout before WW2 and a rover crew leader after the war, had a bagpipe band, and were an inseparable crew. Still have his hat (he was a pin head and I could wear none of his fantastic hat collection) and national service badge. However here...

    British slouch hat

Hi Ryker, these types of slouch or bush hats hats were worn in Burma during WW2 and in the South African war by UK forces, the Gurkhas still wear a form of them for ceremonial dress. The difference for the UK version was often a press stud clip to fold them up and a smaller thinner puggaree or...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Here's my new old slouch hat I picked up recently. Its stamped 1966 as a Dunkerley Ltd. the founder of Akubra, and supplied to the armed services as one of several contractors. Road tested at Mt Maroon Qld.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

I'm sure I had some pickled over there, and there is a pale variety that is only recognizable in full vegetable form, or sliced in "normal" fashion: and the only acceptable dressing on chips is salt...though Poutine when its-20C and snowing is my exception

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Gday Shoe, is that tinned beetroot or fancy fresh beetroot? Our north American cousins struggle to fathom that custom, two great nations divided by one vegetable

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

That would make sense mate, it still has the old owners initials in metal plates on the sweat which is a feature of older European hats. Thanks for the update

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Gday from across the water. I'm starting to covet some of the Mallory's I'm seeing you blokes post, had never heard of them prior. Picked up this tidy little unit with a brim over odds for a trilby but have never heard of the brand, not even sure if it isnt the style as it has no lining and no...

    Studded British Officer's Field Boots

I met, in Los Angeles at the Rose Bowl market about 1999, a bloke who had bought, in Adelaide Australia, a 20foot shipping container of brand new WWI army boots with two types of cleats or hobnails. The samples he had were just too small for me but has had sold or the largest sizes ( blokes were...

    Morse Code

My old man was a wireless telegrapher/operator on Corvette ships in the Royal Australian Navy during WW2 and told me of recognizing other operators "hands" so he could tell who was sending before they identified themselves. He told a poignant story of knowing other ships ops over the course of...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

That's great Bowen, it's one of the few things we can still do on this side of the globe too is throw a line out. Went with my son to murder a few bream and some things never grow old, this is my son wearing his Akubra Angler that he has worn mercilessly for 4 years and me in a 50yo Akubra...

    Akubra Overload

I do remember the Clubman and similar Johnny, and my Dad was of the era where going to work at the office without a hat was sacrilege. I was an outdoor worker so my choices were bigger brims for shade and a handmade brow band. Now I'm an office worker in mental health and today's choice is my no...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Hey Johnny, Went looking for a shot of old and found one from 1981. I think it was the toughest Akubra I ever had apart from my Army slouch hat, my Hamptons couldn't take anything like the same punishment, nor my sons Angler.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

That's a good looking Snowy, Johnny, I wore mine to destruction from when I bought it in 1980 working on a cattle station in outback Queensland, eventually giving it a viking funeral only last year as a shapeless collection of holes held together by felt. Definitely hard work hats and work/good hats

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Cant get over the plethora of hat brands. This is my unadorned German "Modern" brand with its "Perfekt" brand bash stabilizer and protector fitted at the forepeak of the hat. Soft felt, understated thin ribbon without a real bow and cross brim length too wide for a trilby and not enough for a...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Good to see a post on Christie's hats, there seems to be no dedicated forum to them? This is my "work and knock around hat" for outdoors and manual labor, a Christie's I picked up second hand and altered the brim to let water and debris fall off rather than be caught by a complete upturned brim...

    Akubra Overload

This is my sons Akubra Angler getting the snow and ice treatment in Japan, it got wet, froze, thawed on repeat and never lost its shape, it has however developed holes on the crown folds after 3 years of punishment so he has tested it to almost destruction

    Akubra Overload

Gday Tsores, I'm with Johnny but would throw in the weather re humidity. I'm often transporting hats between humid and dry climates and notice how hats shrink in drier climates or hold size in humid areas. So yes every hat I've had shrinks and from my experience noticeable in 6 months or so of...

    Akubra Overload

Hi Steven, I've got Christie's, Luton, Stetson, Stanley and Barbisio hats and I dont think Akubra shrinks more noticeably than any of the others. I fit a 56 or 6 7/8 straight out of the box but always get a 57 or 7 at least otherwise I find I'm putting the stretcher on more often than I'd like...
