I hope that this is not a redundant thread, but I could use some help. For reasons I won't go into here, I can't go sockless. What are my options with things like loafers and boat shoes when worn with shorts? Should I just forego such shoes, or is there a type of sock that is acceptable with shorts?
Congrats, John.
May it bring you joy for a long time. I had a 1000 and an 800, but sold both. The 800 was great for short notes, but for any more extended writing it was too big for me--and I don't have small hands. I have the blue 600, but never really use it: there is something about its...
Feraud,
I've gotta add my approval. You're looking good in that suit.
I saw a poplin suit on the Target website (sand colour) that I really liked. It goes for $100. Can anyone tell me anything about it. If it is worth anything at all, I might like to get one next time I am in the US.
Any and...
I'll second the Ron Bennett recommendation. They have fantastic sales. I am more interested in quality, style and value than in vintage per se. Living near the outlet in Alexandria, I can find some great deals.
I've read two schools of thought on cleaning a suit. One is that cleaning distresses the fabric so is to be avoided; the other is that small particles of grime inevitably gets into the 'grooves' of the cloth, into the weave itself, and exerts pressure which will distort the fabric over time...
Ties are not really uncomfortable, in fact not at all if the shirt fits correctly. This time of year, as the weather gets colder, I wear a tie quite a bit because you retain a bit more heat than with an open shirt. So on the one hand, ties don't detract from comfort if the shirt fits, and on the...
Allen Edmond is based in Port Washington, Wisconsin (which is basically a northern suburb of Milwaukee). They make almost all their shoes there. They also, I think, do the refurbishing in Wisconsin.
So have we established a rule yet? After all, I come here to discover and conform to the rules. Unless told otherwise by loungers, I'm going to try to find a short sleeve shirt (not sure I have any) and wear it with a tie. In fact, if I am told otherwise, then I really will do it. The ONLY...
Great movie. The first movie I ever downloaded free on the internet. I am amazed at how many movies have no copyright, and therefore can be found on google video and similar places. I wonder if this will drive the prices of collections down soon.
I found this thread to be extremely helpful. I have a fantastic peak lapel Joseph Abboud suit that I got new for peanuts (well under $100), but I rarely wear it to anything other than fairly formal evening events. I have assumed that with my blonde hair and blue eyes I need more of a low...
Tomasso--I think we're saying the same thing. Is your point that vintage wool tends to be heavy, while modern fabrics, 100s, 120s, etc. are much lighter and therefore better suited to warm weather? My observation is that better quality modern wool fabrics are durable, light and drape reasonably...
Brown, like wood, brings out good qualities in virtually anything set against it. I am blonde with blue eyes, so I don't wear black or white very much: I have wool suits in tan and dark brown, and a bone-coloured linen one. My favourite jacket is brown tweed, though my camel jacket comes out a...
I try to get to the Ron Bennett warehouse on occasion (in Alexandria). They do good sales, and in addition to their own lines (including CEO) they sell Boss and other decent makes. I saw a suit earlier this year, nice cut and colour for me with working buttons on the sleeve. It was $500...
Not trying to be disagreeable, but I am ever grateful for modern fabrics. I couldn't get through winter in most vintage suits, much less summer or autumn.
