That's funny, Baron Kurtz, because the hat your are posting comes from a hatter in Marvejols, and my grandparents and great-grandparents lived in Marvejols, a small town in Lozère. Maybe they knew this hatter!

Here is my new hat, a brown beaver fedora custom made by Pauline Brosset. It is almost identical to the gray one I have posted a few months ago, except for the felt color:

Yes, I understand that initials were common, I wasn't clear in my question. :) What I meant is "Do you know where I could find such initials nowadays in order to mark my hats?" From the few I have seen in older hats, there is no manufacturer name on them, so it is difficult to know where to...

I have noticed that on a number of vintage hats in France, the monograms are similar to the ones in your photo, small letters attached to the sweatband like a staple. I have never found anything about them, and I don't know if we can find them nowadays nor how to call this kind of marking.

I must admit that when I go to "general" thrift stores here in Paris, most of the fedoras I see are black. It depends however, because some of these stores are more specialized than others, and in these we tend to see more colorful hats. And, I keep in mind that not every item we can find there...

I'm not sure black hats were so prevalent in France back in the days. All I can say is that my grandfather had two hats (Flechet) from around 1943, the first in navy blue, and the second in a taupe/gray color. Moreover, when you watch the films by Jean-Pierre Melville, you do not see much black...

Which hat for a Noir Movie ?

I do agree with what TheDane and ManofKent have said. The problem with most ready-to-wear modern hats will be the low crown if you want a "film noir" hat anyway. I have no Akubra Federation IV myself but if you want to stay in ready-to-wear maybe this would be the best alternative? You should...

Which hat for a Noir Movie ?

Which hat for a Noir Movie ?

Which hat for a Noir Movie ?

Glad to see another French person on this board! A few months ago, Pauline Brosset (Paris-based custom hatter) made me a hat inspired by the one worn by Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. You can see it here...

    Panama Hat Thread

Panama hat by Pauline Brosset Hi everybody! I just get my new Panama hat. It is a custom Montecristi from my milliner Pauline Brosset here in Paris. The weaving is a grade 20. Since the grading system seems not to be very reliable from one vendor to another, she told me that it takes two...

hat by French hatter Pauline Brosset Hi from Paris everybody! Here are some photos of the custom hat the young (she's not even 30!) and very gifted French hatter Pauline Brosset has just made for me. She really has a palpable passion for hat making, and we took a long moment to discuss the...

Here is a photo: the liner is stitched from place to place, and the white knot on the leather sweatband seems to be stitched with the hat, preventing to completely pull up the sweatband.
