If I get the leave approved we will be going to Wichita in late March. My brother in law said he will take me to Hatman Jack's and I am wondering if anyone has been there. Also how cold can I expect it to be in late March, do I need a mad bomber hat?

If memory serves me right IC, I was there in the mid 90's and met Jack. Very nice guy, good hatter & full service shop. Mostly Westerns but then, he IS in Wichita

I have not been there personally. I did send in a trio of hats for various repairs a few years back. The results were mixed. To be honest, I would probably not use them again for hats that I really cherish.

Hi

I bought my two Sun bodies from Jack. I also had him re-shape a Beaver Brand Stony River that I wear a lot. He has a good selection of Western and Fedoras. I plan on (eventually) having him build a custom fedora of some kind. Economics and a lack of what I want in a custom hat has me waiting.

I just picked up a Sun Body for one of the neighbor kids back home, and I have a holey Stratton Trooper hat getting made into a Bush hat for my son. His work on hats is inexpensive and I like what he's done so far.

It can be COLD here in March, and it's Kansas. A calm day in Kansas is a mere 25 knot wind. I would definitely bring a wool stocking cap, but a Mad Bomber hat is a bit much.

Yes, Indycop, Kansas is cold this time of year, especially for a Florida boy! I haven't been there in a while but I don't miss the winters there.

Hi

There's a lot to do here, but not much you're used to. There's a very good reason people go to Florida on vacation...

Cowtown will be pretty much closed during March I think, but it's a nice place.

This is one of the cooler museum's I've ever been in. They have a large collection of collections. They have a mummy or two. They have a bunch of huge Buddha statues. They have roughly 50 mannequins wearing WW1 and 2 uniforms. They have everyone's autograph (Cardinal Richelieu's Supposedly). It's just weird how many different things that they have.

I ate lunch here today:

This place serves the old Maid rite (crumbly hamburger) and makes their own Root Beer. Not everyone likes it, but most people do.

The Coleman outlet is a great place to get inexpensive camping items. They also have a 12 foot square room of vintage camping gear.

Warning, I haven't been to this one. It's on the other side of town from where I work, but it's been open for about 60 years.

There's another fellow in my dorm who wears a wider-brimmed fedora from Hatman Jack's. If it is representative of the fedoras for sale there, then it is not promising. But I suppose the best way to find out is to go there.

Hi

One of Jack's strength's is his selection of Sun Body hats. I've bought three from him so far, one is a present. They cost $38.00, but that includes blocking the crown and working the brim. If memory serves, a better band with a bow is $12.00. He usually has quite a selection of crown and brim sizes.

You can email him at sales@hatmanjacks.com

Just a thought.

The Brother in law is PROBABLY thinking of Mort's Martini and Cigar bar. I have no clue if it was hit with the statewide smoking ban or not. I hope you can find a buffalo skull. There's a buffalo game preserve in Canton KS called Maxwell Game Preserve, but they have a yearly hunt and it's a tourist camp.

One of the places on the page below is in Haven KS and mentions Skulls. The restaurant in Haven is usually VERY good, and served family style. They also have good cinnamon rolls in Yoder, which is nearby. Amish country.

Get a picture of the TSA guys when you tell them you have a buffalo skull in your carry on luggage...

While I'm not from Wichita, I visited a few times when a friend of mine worked at Cessna for a while a number of years ago. Be that as it may I cannot concur with Brother Mike. If anyone NEEDS a Mad Bomber, you do, IC!

Lol I asked if I could get a real coonskin cap but was told in no uncertain terms by the wife no. But a mad bomber hmmmnnn

Damn I'm good, the first sight on my Mad Bomber hat search and I found a Raccoon fur Bomber hat. It will be fine, until she finds out it's still coonskin... And it's ON SALE.

It was the fact that it was in the davy Crockett style with the tail lol.....oh and the face :)

Hi Indy, are you still showing up? There are a few of us Kansas types, and maybe we can meet.

I've seen a skunk Crockett style cap with the face. That should keep people from annoying you, well most of us anyway.
