It's a lovely thought, and she deserves it. But I think this is really gonna confuse the tourists. Is it Big Ben, or Big Bess?

Big Ben isn't being renamed, the tower is. Big Ben is the bell ;)

I don't do renames. The Jackie-Rob is still the Interboro and JFK is still Idlewild (you NYers will know what I mean;)).

..and the "RFK Bridge" shall be called the Triborough until they lower me into the ground. :D

  6. Big Ben was made in 1858 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry who also made the Liberty Bell.

    Hi

I think that the Queen (especially this one) is great. If I was the POTUS, I'd probably bow, heck she served in WW2 just like my Dad did. I think that they should be naming something new for her, that way it will stick. Big Ben will always be Big Ben, and I'm sure she knows it.

Wasn't the tower named Westminster Tower, or something like that, heretofore?

Yes, its the Westminster Clock Tower, but everyone calls it "Big Ben" despite that only being the Bell's name. It's a nice gesture but, to be honest, its a bit of a silly idea to rename it as it is known across the world as "Big Ben" and that isnt likely to change.

If they call it Elizabeth the First Tower then I shall be quite happy, none of this QEII nonsense!

'Round my neck of the woods, we have a railway station called "Southern Cross".

Unless you're a tourist, most people still call it by the old name: "Spencer Street Station".

  16. And my parents would agree with you, Feraud... [IMG]

Great photo Widebrim! Can I assume that was taken under the Triborough on the Queens side at Astoria Park?

They've already tried that in Toronto: Rogers, Loblaws, and Apple Inc. stations? No.

This renaming business doesn't stick! Even one of our modern builds, the SkyDome, was renamed "The Rogers Centre" after one of our telecommunications monopolies bought it. I don't care, I'm still seeing baseball games at the SkyDome, I ain't calling it by a brand name!

    Hi

I don't always agree, I do miss attending the Poulon Weed-eater Independence Bowl. That's just funny right there.
