Those dates you saw are definitely wrong. Tommy very briefly wore a cross-zip (HD Cycle Queen) in 76 when both of these photos would be from. They weren’t doing this stuff in 1970.

Indeed. 74 has always been acknowledged as the start date. Those cross-zips must have been acquired later in 76 too - as memory serves, the first album was released in April that year, and the cover shot came from a shoot they did with Roberta Bayley for Punk magazine in February 76. Famously in that photo (as Aloysius is well aware!) there's only Johnny wearing a cross-zip, so the rest came at some point thereafter. Early days, still refining their image, and working on a very small budget all played a part I would think.

A old friend of mine is a Ramones fanatic/collector and actually owns one of Dee Dee's leather jackets. He was pals with Johnny, and was the source of many of the B-movie horror shirts he could be seen wearing in their later days. My pal still makes a living selling that stuff.
