Has anyone ever encountered a ******* with a bound brim? All that I have seen have one or more rows of stitching running around the outside perimeter of the brim. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/Greghats/*******edge.jpg
Something else odd about this one, inside the brim is stamped "This is a reject from the Stetson employee's company store" or something like that, I'll post some photos when it comes off the stretcher... anyone else have a bound-brimed *******?

Rick -- is this the ******* that was on eBay a while back? It's ringing a bell. Very interesting -- it would be great if you could post some shots of the inside of the hat, as well. The two features that are atypical are the bound brim and the wide ribbon. I'd be really curious to learn more of the story on this one!

Cheers,

******* with bound edge? Nope, never seen one. The one i own is raw edge. the rest i've seen have the stitching you describe.

I note that the ribbon on the one you pictured seems wider than that on most *******s i've encountered. Is this so? And the brim seems very stingy. Mine has 2.5" brim on a size 7 hat. Is this a later 50s or even 60s *******?

You know, I wonder whether this lid was originally a Royal Stetson that had a ******* sweat sewn in by mistake -- hence the "reject" aspect. I'm inclined to think that this lid is more of an aberration than a style of ******* that was actually in distribution as such. If so, it's probably a complete rarity -- like the U.S. postage stamp that was issued with the upside down bi-plane...:)

That crossed my mind as well. Kinda a "neither fish nor fowl" Franken-hat situation. It was perhaps an amalgam of a number of parts? [huh]

I just bought an old magazine ad today at an antique store for a Whippet in 'Gridiron Grey' and it very clearly shows a typical bound edge and a relatively wide ribbon. $10. The seller had penciled in the supposed date of the ad, 1951, but I have no reason to disbelieve it. The ad also mentions National Hat Week October 13-20! In very tiny print, along the bottom, 'prices slightly higher in Canada.' cost me $2. This store had several old ads in a bin lableled 'men's clothing' and I picked up 8, 3 Stetson, 1 Champ, 1 Lee, 1 Dobbs, and 2 Mallory. One of the Mallory ads is from 1945 and states that ". . . Mallory has been making America's outstanding hats for 122 years." Someday will photo and post, but not soon, really busy now, but I had seen this thread and wanted to add this information.

My parents have a Les Paul style Gibson that runs a strange parallel. I won't go into the specifics since this isn't a giutar forum ( but really, you should see it; it is NICE...) - Unable to find a corresponding model on the showroom floor or on the internet, my dad finally called Gibson and asked what kind of animal was this. The fellow answering the phone said on some runs, towards the end, there's just "stuff" around, and with this "stuff", sometimes you end up with sort of a custom model. That is to say, you get a Les Paul Custom body with Studio headstock or brass hardware, or something else along those lines. Makes me wonder if this is just "one of those things" where, as someone stated before, one liner or sweatband was sewn into the body of another style...not necessarily a mistake, per se, but just "stuff" that was around.
