Fans of the excellent 1990's film "Quiz Show" will want to pick up next week's issue of The New Yorker, containing an article by Charles Van Doren himself, telling for the first time his full, inside story of his role in the 1950s TV quiz scandals. There's an overview of the upcoming article in today's Boston Globe, by columnist Alex Beam, available here --

http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/articles/2008/07/19/after_49_years_charles_van_doren_opens_up/

For media-history buffs who expected Van Doren to go to his grave without telling his side of the story, the article will be a must-read -- hopefully a definitive book on the scandals will follow.

I remember Charles Van Doren from the Today Show. He always contributed good stuff to the show. I vividly remember his on screen confession of having been told the answers in advance on the quiz show. What a moment of national disillusionment!
From what I've read before, Charles had some issues with being a member of such a prestigious intellectual family, and wanted to break out of the mold. He sure did! Fascinating story.
