My daughter and I are looking for 30's - 40s movies with costume party or masquerade ball scenes. Can anyone think of any? They don't have to be available for rent or purchase. I know I've seen several, but my mind is just blank now that I'm looking for them. Thanks!

One thing that springs to mind..... there's one of the flashback / fantasy scenes in The Shining to a costume party in, I think, the 30s which I remember as looking pretty good, though it has been a few years since i saw it last....

I did a quick search of keywords on the IMDb and came up with these:

Fast Life (1932)
Blue Montana Skies (1939)
This Time for Keeps (1942)
Rebecca (1940)
Love Me Tonight (1932)
Dead of Night (1945)

There's also this one from 1929 (so unfortunately not 30s or 40s).
One Hysterical Night (1929)

And of course there's the classic masquerade party in 'To Catch a Thief' but that's from 1955 so might not be what you're looking for.

Hope this helps! :)

Madam Satan (1930) is crazy. I just saw it last night. It is Cecil B DeMille film with costumes by Adrian.

There is a masked costume ball on a zeppelin!!!! Do a photo search, it is absolutely wild!!!!

A taste:

Here is a still I took from the costume party scene in The Shining (TV version!):

A very well done set - although I think it was more 40's (unless I'm watching a different movie.)

One of the Dr. Phibes films, either "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" or "Dr. Phibes Rises Again" has a charming costume party, in the 70's-does-20's vein. I'll admit to being smitten with the froghead costume rigged to stangle a man, but all in all, it's enchanting.
