My wife bought me a gift certificate for a custom made shirt from a tailor here in Toronto. tailor
I went for the fitting yesterday, and it was a cool experience. I first picked the fabric...a fairly basic blue, with a slight bit of texture (colour, not feel).
The salesman started by measuring my neck, and was surprised by my large size - 17". (I told him it had to be big to hold up my huge heed...you knew that was coming, right?
)
He then got out a shirt with a size 17 neck for me to put on, to make sure it felt right. Then he started taking measurements...yoke, sleeves, wrist (my left cuff will be 1/4" larger than the right to accommodate my watch!), chest (at a few different levels), etc.
I then chose the collar style (with a slight customisation) and cuff style. I also chose the front placket, back style (2 side pleats, a box pleat or no pleat) and front pocket or not.
The salesman told me that if I took it to a regular cleaners they would wreck it. I could either wash it myself, or take it to a high-end cleaners. A customer in the shop agreed.
The shirt will take 3 weeks to finish. Can't wait...I'll let you know!
David
PS I wouldn't normally mention this, but I know that we are open with prices here at the lounge. This is a $275* shirt! I really doubt that I could love it enough to buy myself another, but it was a great gift from a loving wife!
*The starting price for these shirts...based on fabric choice.
