My novel takes place in D.C. during World War II and this is PERFECT for me.

Why, thank you, ma'am. I could use all the blessings I can get.

I'm particularly taken with image No. 14, the kids crossing the street. (The cutline -- or caption or whatever you wanna call it -- doesn't seem right, though. Rather than "play[ing] in the street," to me it looks more like youngsters crossing a street in their school clothes, if not quite their Sunday best.) Note that those young fellows are wearing fedoras and newsboy caps. Shiny leather shoes, shirts tucked in. And they're still quite young, perhaps not even pubescent.

David Brinkley wrote a wonderful book about his earliest times in Washington, duiring the war. The title is "Washington Goes to War". Among many other intteresting facts he uses to evoke the atmosphere of the city at the time, he points out that there were still at least 15,000 homes in Washington in 1941 that still had outdoor privies, i.e. out houses.
Near pics. It's amazing how color makes things come to life, isn't it?

I've read this book and had to buy it because I loved it so much. Wonderful detail and his wry sense of humor really adds to the overall portrait of the city.

Look what I found last night. A documentary produced by the PBS station in D.C. I watched half of it last night until I got too tired and had to call it a day. Will watch the rest today. It's excellent!
